SEEN FROM ELSEWHERE – Finland and Sweden want to join NATO to protect themselves from Russia. But their membership would also be a real asset for the Alliance, as these two countries stand out for their geographical location, but also for their impressive military capabilities. Finland, in particular, has four strengths.

In recent years, the Western media have often spoken of the alleged strategic genius of Vladimir Putin, who shocked and persecuted the West on several occasions, in 2008 in Georgia, in 2014 in Ukraine and from 2015 in Syria. The “strategic geniushas now achieved what Soviet and Russian politicians tried to prevent for decades, namely the abandonment by Finland and Sweden of their tradition of neutrality and their desire to join NATO.

The war waged against Ukraine, Moscow has justified in particular by its desire to prevent the country’s accession to NATO, an accession which would bring the Western Alliance directly closer to Russia. With Finland’s future NATO membership, Russia will now have a 1,300 kilometer land border with the Alliance.
