“A great Tetris”: how the Cosquer cave, a marvel of prehistory, was saved from the waters

by time news

After passing a narrowing, you have to look up to see the “stars”: a trio of great penguins, drawn in charcoal on the wall. An extremely rare representation in prehistoric art, and particularly unexpected in Provence. Until now, only a handful of divers and scientists had been able to observe these animals so closely in the Cosquer cave, discovered in a creek in 1985 by Henri Cosquer: the underwater cavity is almost inaccessible. In a few days, from June 4, this will be possible for the general public thanks to the opening of a replica, just a few meters from the Old Port of Marseille.
