Colombian Police Capture Suspects in Barrancabermeja Officer’s Murder

Two alleged perpetrators are in custody following a month-long manhunt for the individuals responsible for the death of patrolman Giuseppe Martínez Sarmiento.

A nearly month-long investigation involving surveillance, witness testimony, and extensive video analysis culminated in the capture of two men accused of murdering a police officer in Barrancabermeja, Santander. The arrests, carried out on Sunday, February 8, represent a significant victory for law enforcement in the region.

Manhunt Ends with Arrests in Bucaramanga and Ocaña

Santiago Alberto López Joya, 21, known as ‘Joya’ in criminal circles, was apprehended in Bucaramanga. Simultaneously, Juan David Tovar Torres, 20, was located and detained in Ocaña, Norte de Santander. Both suspects were reportedly attempting to evade authorities in the Oil Port area.

The victim, Giuseppe Martínez Sarmiento, 29, was a patrolman assigned to the Anti-Narcotics Unit and a native of Barrancabermeja. According to authorities, the officer was targeted during a robbery.

“These criminals took the life of our colleague, a native of Barrancabermeja, to steal his belongings,” highlighted Colonel John Jairo Roa Buitrago, commander of the Magdalena Medio Police Department. “Therefore, through meticulous, detailed and tireless work, we managed to materialize the arrest warrants for the crimes of homicide, illegal possession of weapons and theft.”

Extensive Investigation Led to Breakthroughs

The investigation involved a comprehensive review of over 80 hours of security camera footage, coupled with extensive interviews and intelligence gathering. Investigators meticulously reconstructed the suspects’ movements, ultimately leading to their capture.

During the course of the investigation, police recovered a motorcycle believed to have been used in the commission of the crime. Additionally, a separate motorcycle, reported stolen in March 2024 in the Tibú sector, was also recovered and linked to criminal activity.

Recurring Criminal Activity

Both López Joya and Tovar have prior criminal records. López Joya was previously arrested for illegal possession of firearms in 2023 and faces pending charges for drug trafficking in 2025. Tovar has a record for receiving stolen auto parts, dating back to 2025.

Investigators believe the two men are habitual criminals involved in various theft schemes throughout Barrancabermeja, Girón, and Bucaramanga.

Judicial Proceedings Underway

Following their arrest, a guarantee control judge ordered both suspects to be held in pre-trial detention. The decision reflects the seriousness of the charges and the strength of the evidence presented by the prosecution.
