Portuguese Police Operation Injured as Father Opens Fire During Search

A sweeping investigation into the exploitation of minors was met with violence on Monday, as two inspectors with the Braga Criminal Investigation Department of the Judicial Police (PJ) were injured during a house search in Paredes, Portugal. The incident underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement while confronting sensitive and deeply disturbing crimes.

According to a statement released by the PJ, the shooting occurred while officers were executing a search warrant related to an ongoing operation targeting the practice of sexual acts with teenagers, prostitution of minors, pornography of minors, and grooming of minors for sexual purposes.

Multi-City Raids Uncover Alleged Exploitation Network

The operation involved ten simultaneous home searches across multiple municipalities, including Porto, Matosinhos, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Fafe, Arouca, Alijó, Aveiro, and Paredes. The breadth of the investigation suggests a potentially widespread network of exploitation.

The violence erupted when the 77-year-old father of a suspect allegedly opened fire on the officers. “Three shots were fired, grazing the two PJ inspectors in the head and shoulder,” a senior official stated.

Inspectors Hospitalized, Suspects in Custody

Both injured inspectors were swiftly provided with on-site first aid by an INEM team before being transported to Penafiel Hospital. “Both received first aid on site…and were taken to Penafiel Hospital, free from danger to their lives,” the PJ confirmed in its statement.

Both the father and his 43-year-old son, the primary suspect in the exploitation case, were immediately arrested. They face charges of coercion, resisting an employee, and attempted murder.

Operation Continues Despite Violent Confrontation

The PJ has affirmed its commitment to continuing the investigation despite the violent encounter. “The efforts continue with a view to achieving the objectives of the operation,” the statement read. Notably, the PJ emphasized that the inspectors did not return fire, despite being armed. “It should be noted…that no shots were fired by the inspectors of this Police, despite being in possession of their respective service weapons, which they wielded in a professional and appropriate manner,” the police explained.

The incident highlights the complex and often dangerous nature of investigations involving the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. The PJ’s ongoing operation signals a determined effort to dismantle these networks and bring perpetrators to justice.
