Dawn O’Porter: I Quit Drinking & Prioritized Self-Care at 47

by Ahmed Ibrahim World Editor

Dawn O’Porter, the bestselling author and television personality, is charting a new course focused on well-being, a shift she says has been profoundly liberating. At 47, O’Porter is embracing a life centered around self-care, a journey detailed in her upcoming memoir, Hungry Eyes, set for release in June. A significant part of this transformation has been a complete cessation of alcohol consumption, a decision she made “overnight” after decades of socializing with a drink in hand. This commitment to prioritizing her own health, coupled with a pragmatic approach to indulgence, is resonating with those seeking a more balanced lifestyle.

O’Porter’s decision to quit drinking wasn’t born of a gradual reduction, but a sudden realization. “I’ve partied for 30 years,” she explained, adding with a touch of humor, “If someone wants to call me boring, they can go ahead.” The author, who shares two sons, Art, 11, and Valentine, eight, with actor Chris O’Dowd, found herself simply “sick of being hungover” and decided to stop. This wasn’t a judgment on others’ choices, she stressed, but a personal reckoning with how alcohol was impacting her own life. She acknowledges that the change in perception from others was initially jarring, but ultimately surmountable. “People’s perception of how fun you are really changes, and I just have to block out all of that noise and focus on myself,” she said.

Finding Freedom in Sobriety and Self-Prioritization

The shift away from alcohol, O’Porter discovered, wasn’t about deprivation but about reclaiming agency. “What you realise is, a year later, no one actually cares. My social life hasn’t changed at all; I still go out all the time, I still have as much fun as ever,” she noted. The key, she found, was reassessing her identity outside of the context of drinking. This newfound focus on self-care extends beyond sobriety, encompassing a commitment to physical and mental well-being. O’Porter describes this period as “the biggest act of self-care I believe I’ve ever done.”

For O’Porter, this dedication to self-care represents a departure from her earlier years, when “fun, success, working really hard, striving” were the primary drivers. Now, she prioritizes activities that nourish her, both physically and emotionally. She’s found a particular benefit in strength training, despite not being a “naturally sporty person.” “I’m not a natural exerciser… I was never sporty at school,” she admitted. However, she’s experienced a significant positive impact on her physical and mental state since starting weight training about six to eight months ago, feeling “totally in control of myself, and my body felt really strong.”

The 80/20 Rule and a Love of Food

Central to O’Porter’s approach to wellness is the 80/20 rule, a principle she applies to her diet. “I’m really indulgent by nature, and me fighting my indulgent nature is a daily effort… I love food so much, it is the love of my life,” she explained. This means adhering to healthy eating 80% of the time, while allowing herself to fully enjoy less-healthy options the remaining 20%. “I work on my own, I can make most of my own meals, so 80% of the time I’m really looking after myself, 20% I eat what the hell I want,” she said. This approach allows her to savor the pleasures of food without guilt or restriction, focusing on health rather than strict calorie counting.

Beyond Diet and Exercise: Nurturing the Soul

O’Porter’s self-care regimen extends beyond physical health and dietary choices. She emphasizes the importance of nurturing the soul through activities she enjoys. This includes reading books that resonate with her, curating a positive social media feed, and immersing herself in music. She currently hosts a series on Classic FM, celebrating love in its many forms, and finds that listening to classical music creates a sense of peace while she works and writes. Her ideal self-care day, she described, would involve breakfast with her children, a productive workday punctuated by a strength training class, and quality time with her family.

O’Porter’s journey highlights a crucial realization: prioritizing oneself isn’t selfish, but rather a foundation for better relationships and a more fulfilling life. “I was always someone who took care of other people, and now this new version of me, where I really take care of myself first, has meant that I am so much better at taking care of other people,” she said. “I think that is the biggest lesson that I’ve learned, the older that I’ve got.”
