Breast Implant Illness: Woman Shares 20-Year Health Battle & $130K Costs

For years, fans of reality television personality Brendija Glenvila have watched as her face underwent a subtle but noticeable transformation. The former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star, 53, recently revealed the painful reason behind the changes: a silent, years-long battle with a severe infection stemming from ruptured breast implants. Glenvila’s story, shared with TMZ, serves as a stark reminder of the potential long-term risks associated with cosmetic surgery and the importance of regular monitoring.

The journey to diagnosis was arduous. Glenvila explained that despite regular mammograms showing no immediate cause for concern, she knew something was deeply wrong. “I definitely had a parasite. I was shocked since, honestly, I had these implants for almost 20 years,” she told TMZ. “They looked quality, they felt good, mammograms were fine. It was only after an ultrasound that the truth came out… There’s a thing called breast implant illness.” She learned that breast implants are often recommended to be replaced every 10 years, a guideline she hadn’t followed, operating under the assumption that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

The reality, as it turned out, was far more serious. Glenvila discovered her breast implants had completely ruptured, and silicone had migrated throughout her lymphatic system. This widespread leakage triggered a debilitating infection in her face, which proved difficult to treat because her lymph nodes were completely blocked. “My breasts were completely ruptured, and the silicone had spread throughout all of my lymph nodes – that’s what caused the infection in my face, and it couldn’t drain out because the lymph nodes were completely clogged,” she explained.

Fortunately, Glenvila recently underwent surgery to remove the implants and reports feeling significantly better. “I feel great. The doctor says, ‘Rest.’ And I’m like, ‘I can’t rest. I’ve been home for three years,’” she shared, acknowledging the extended period of isolation and health struggles she’s endured. The ordeal has been financially draining, costing her an estimated $100,000 to $130,000 in medical expenses, depleting her savings and causing anxiety about her financial future, as she revealed in an interview with Us Weekly last August.

Glenvila’s experience highlights the growing awareness of Breast Implant Illness (BII), a term used to describe a range of systemic symptoms that some women attribute to their breast implants. While not yet formally recognized as a distinct medical condition, BII is increasingly being researched, and symptoms can include fatigue, joint pain, cognitive dysfunction, and autoimmune issues. According to ARS medicīnas klīnika, tomosynthesis, a more advanced form of mammography, can be particularly beneficial for women with dense breast tissue, potentially aiding in earlier detection of issues related to implants.

Despite her own challenging experience, Glenvila isn’t discouraging others from considering breast augmentation. However, she strongly emphasizes the importance of diligent follow-up care. “I’m not saying don’t do it,” she said. “Just, if you do, keep up with it… Keep checking. Even if everything looks good and feels good, check them.”

Glenvila first publicly revealed she had received a diagnosis in December 2025, though she didn’t disclose the specifics at the time. She described the preceding years as emotionally taxing, admitting to feeling isolated and experiencing heightened anxiety. “It’s been hell. I’ve grow an introvert. Walking out of the house, I have severe anxiety because I’ve been home for almost two years,” she shared.

Glenvila previously indicated that her health issues began after filming “The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip” in Morocco in early 2023, as reported by Entertainment Tonight. The facial deformities, which sparked concern among fans, were a direct result of the infection stemming from the ruptured implants.

As Glenvila continues her recovery, her story serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of proactive health management and the potential complications associated with long-term cosmetic procedures. Her next steps involve continued medical follow-up and a focus on regaining her physical and emotional well-being.
