In fiction the American writer prevails with the novel “The Netanyahus”. Special mention to Ukrainian reporters for “courage, endurance and commitment”

The 2022 edition of the Pulitzer Prizes saw the 41-year-old American writer (Somers Point, New Jersey, 1980) win, in the “for fiction” category, with the novel The Netanyahus (published by New York Review Books), a work that has as its subtitle “Tale of a minor and ultimately also negligible episode in the history of a very famous family” and which concerns Benzion Netanyahu, the father of the Israeli politician, Benjamin Netanyahu.


The book had already won the National Jewish Book Award for Fiction 2021. Nominated by Granta as one of the best American novelists in 2017, Cohen in Italy is published by Codice Edizioni; he is the author of novels (The book of numbers2019, Another occupation2018), short stories (Four new messages2021) and essays. The author has been interviewed several times by “Corriere” and by “la Lettura”: the latest in October last year.

The Pulitzer Prizes include over twenty categories divided between journalism (fifteen) then literature, theater and music. This year’s edition did not see a theme, a trend or a trend prevail as it had happened in previous editions when there was an attention, for example, to online information. The New York Times won in the International News category for a series of articles on US drone strikes in the Middle East. The Public Service Journalism Award for the coverage of the January 6, 2021 assault on the United States Capitol, an attack on democracy, to the Washington Post. Reuters agency won for images of the Covid budget in India while the Miami Herald received recognition for Breaking News (on its coverage of the collapse of an apartment building). The Pulitzer Committee also awarded “special mention to Ukrainian journalists for their courage, perseverance and commitment to provide truthful accounts during Vladimir Putin’s ruthless invasion of their country and his propaganda war in Russia,” it announced. Marjorie Miller, new administrator of the prestigious award.

As for the other Pulitzer literary and artistic categories: the prize for the History section went to two titles, Covered With Night (WW Norton & Co) by Nicole Eustance, a story of justice at the dawn of American history, e Cuba: An American History (Simon & Schuster) by Ada Ferrer, which traces the history of the Caribbean island in the light of its difficult relations with the USA. The work frank: sonnets (Graywolf Press). Diane Seuss won in the Poetry category: is a collection that uses the poetic form of the sonnet to tell about the United States and its contradictions including the discontent of the working class in the so-called Rust Belt, northwest of New York State. In the Theater category the award was given to Fat Ham by James Ijames, an entertaining and engaging play that transposes the story of Hamlet in the context of a family barbecue. Finally, Raven Chacon, Navajo composer, performer and artist, went to the Pulitzer for Music: awarded Voiceless Mass.

Established by Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911), a Hungarian-born American, the award is run by Columbia University in New York. Winners get $ 15,000 and a certificate.
