by Ethan Brooks

ANTALYA, Turkey – Serbian tennis player Mia Ristić, 19, took a significant step toward a major tournament today, winning her first-round qualifying match at the Challenger event in Antalya. Ristić defeated Russia’s Darja Astakhova 6-3, 6-2, advancing her bid for a spot in the main draw. The match, whereas decisive on the scoreboard, reportedly took an hour and 50 minutes to complete.

The victory marks a promising start for Ristić, currently ranked 274th in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), as she aims to break into the top 250. This qualifying tournament in Antalya represents a key opportunity for the young Serbian player to elevate her ranking and gain valuable experience on the international stage. The path forward isn’t easy, however, as Ristić will need to overcome another Russian opponent to reach the main draw.

A Hard-Fought First Set

According to reports from Telegraf.rs, the first set proved to be a closely contested affair. Ristić initially gained a break advantage, only to find herself trailing shortly after in a series of broken serves. Despite the back-and-forth nature of the set, she ultimately managed to secure the lead.

The second set saw a more assertive performance from Ristić. She immediately broke Astakhova’s serve at the start and maintained that advantage through the fourth game, building momentum toward a decisive victory. Her ability to consolidate the early break proved crucial in securing the win.

Next Up: Ibragimova

Ristić’s next challenge will be Alevtina Ibragimova, another representative from Russia. The upcoming match is expected to be less challenging, as Ristić is ranked approximately 50 places higher than her opponent. This favorable ranking suggests she enters the second round of qualifying as the clear favorite.

Ristić’s current WTA ranking of 274 places her just outside the top 250, a milestone she’s aiming to achieve. Her career record currently stands at 93-66, with two ITF titles to her name, according to Wikipedia. She achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 266 in August 2024.

Rising Serbian Talent

Mia Ristić has been steadily gaining recognition within the tennis world. In August 2022, at the age of 16, she secured her first professional tournament win at the $25k ITF event in Vrnjačka Banja, Serbia, defeating Cristina Dinu in the final. She further demonstrated her potential in July 2023 by qualifying for her first WTA Tour main-draw debut at the Palermo Ladies Open, overcoming Çağla Büyükakçay and Kathinka von Deichmann in qualifying matches.

Ristić’s junior career also included a notable achievement: winning the U16 European Championship in Přerov, Czech Republic, in July 2022, without dropping a set. In the final, she defeated Marta Soriano Santiago, losing only two games.

The tournament in Antalya provides a valuable platform for Ristić to continue her ascent in the professional tennis ranks. Her performance thus far suggests she is capable of making a significant impact on the sport.

Ristić will face Ibragimova later this week, with the winner advancing to the main draw of the Antalya Challenger. Further updates on her progress will be available on the WTA website and through official tournament channels.
