BOSTON – The Boston Celtics’ dynasty of the 1980s remains a touchstone for basketball fans, a standard against which all championship teams are measured. Even as the modern Celtics celebrate their own dominant 2024 title run, the question inevitably arises: how would those eras stack up against each other? For Robert Parish, a key member of those iconic Celtics teams, the answer leans heavily in favor of the past. While acknowledging the talent and collective success of the current squad, Parish believes the 1986 Celtics, specifically, would prove too formidable a challenge.
Speaking recently, the Hall of Fame center pinpointed one crucial difference: the unique challenge posed by teammate Bill Walton. “I’m going to say the ’86 Celtics for this reason: Nobody had an answer for Bill Walton,” Parish told reporters. “The NBA did not have an answer for Bill Walton. And that’s why we were successful with that ’86 team. And that’s why we are considered one of the all-time best teams. Bill Walton made the difference. No doubt. Hands down. Because today’s Celtics, they could do nothing with William. Not a thing.”
Parish, who earned championships with the Celtics in 1981, 1984, and 1986, emphasized the importance of team cohesion and selflessness that defined those Boston squads. He noted a shared philosophy, one where players prioritized the collective goal over individual accolades. “We all bought into this philosophy that you’re playing for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back of the jersey,” Parish added, according to The Athletic. “And I believe we all bought into that. We checked our egos at the door, and I think that’s paramount. We were always on the same page. We wanted to win the championship. And we knew we weren’t going to win championships playing like individuals. We’ve got to do it from a team perspective.”
That team-first mentality, Parish explained, started at the top with Larry Bird. “It started with our leader, Larry [Bird]. He checked his ego at the door. So, if our leader can check his ego, clearly the rest of us could check our ego. And that’s where it starts: with the leader.” He went on to praise the current Celtics for exhibiting a similar collective spirit, stating, “That’s one thing I like about today’s Celtics. They win collectively. Not one person doing the work. They’re winning and being successful collectively. They’re doing it as a team. And I respect that.”
The Dominance of the 1986 Celtics
The 1986 Boston Celtics finished the regular season with an impressive 67-15 record, establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with. Their home court advantage at Boston Garden was particularly pronounced, boasting a remarkable 40-1 record. According to NBA.com, the team was anchored by a legendary frontcourt featuring Parish alongside Bird and Kevin McHale.
That dominance continued into the playoffs, culminating in a six-game victory over the Houston Rockets in the NBA Finals. Larry Bird was named Finals MVP, but the team’s success was a testament to its overall depth and balance. Beyond Bird and Parish, the roster included fellow Hall of Famers like Kevin McHale and Dennis Johnson, creating a formidable lineup that opponents struggled to contain.
A Modern Dynasty: The 2024 Boston Celtics
The 2024 Celtics, coached by Joe Mazzulla, too demonstrated exceptional regular-season prowess, finishing with a league-best 64-18 record. Led by the dynamic duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, and bolstered by the contributions of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis, the team consistently outmatched its competition.
Their playoff run was equally impressive, posting a dominant 16-3 record en route to the NBA Finals. There, they faced a tough challenge from Luka Dončić and the Dallas Mavericks, ultimately prevailing in five games. Jaylen Brown earned the Finals MVP award, solidifying his place among the league’s elite players.
While acknowledging the impressive achievements of the 2024 team, Parish’s comments highlight the enduring legacy of the 1986 Celtics and the unique impact of players like Bill Walton. As the Celtics organization continues to build upon its storied history, the debate over which era represents the pinnacle of success is sure to continue. The team will next focus on preparations for the 2026-2027 season, with training camp scheduled to initiate in September.
