Police responded to a call regarding a robbery in the 3200 block of Sandwich Street shortly after 6:00 p.m. Wednesday. Windsor police quickly tracked the suspect to the area of Rankin Avenue and Wyandotte Street West. There, officers encountered a man armed with a knife. During the ensuing interaction, the suspect was shot by police.

Paul Smith, a resident of Rankin Avenue, witnessed part of the unfolding scene. “So I was coming out for a cigarette and going to [the] ATM and I heard a ‘pop’ so I just like, I know it’s gunfire,” Smith recounted. He described hearing and seeing police “unload” on the individual and noted the street remained closed for several hours following the shooting. “Now I can’t even go back home,” Smith said Wednesday evening. “But it is surreal, right? You know, I hate to obtain used to this. It feels like I’m living back in the States again.”

Rankin Avenue remains closed between Wyandotte Street West and University Avenue as the SIU continues its investigation.
