Nifty Pullback: JM Financial’s Rahul Sharma on Buying Opportunities & Key Levels

by mark.thompson business editor

Investors navigating a volatile market are looking for signals of stability and potential opportunity. Recent analysis from JM Financial Services offers a cautiously optimistic outlook, suggesting that despite short-term pullbacks, strategic buying may be warranted. The firm’s director and head of technical & derivative research, Rahul Sharma, points to key levels and specific stocks that could offer gains in the coming weeks, even as broader geopolitical uncertainties persist. Understanding these recommendations requires a look at the current market dynamics and Sharma’s rationale for identifying potential winners.

Sharma’s assessment comes after the Nifty 50 experienced a recent rebound, followed by a pullback, but he believes the market has demonstrated resilience. He noted that the way the market handled a gap-down opening was encouraging, as it didn’t trigger a wave of fresh selling. This suggests a degree of underlying strength, even amidst broader concerns. The Nifty 50 is currently expected to trade within a six-week range of 24,400 to 25,200, according to Sharma, with a sustained breakout above 25,200 not anticipated in the immediate term. This cautious stance is attributed to weakening market breadth – the number of Nifty constituents trading below their 20-day Simple Moving Average has increased significantly in recent weeks.

Navigating the Nifty and Bank Nifty

While the Nifty 50 appears range-bound, Sharma sees relative strength in the Bank Nifty, which has already surpassed its September 26, 2024 high. He anticipates a period of consolidation for Bank Nifty over the next few sessions, with key support levels at 55,000 and 54,400. This resilience in the banking sector, even in the face of overnight developments concerning HDFC Bank, is a positive sign. Sharma believes Bank Nifty’s performance could contribute to a recovery in the broader Nifty index.

From a broader perspective, Sharma believes the current phase presents a tactical buying opportunity, particularly for investors with a slightly longer horizon. He emphasized that his team has been recommending clients accumulate Nifty ETFs during volatile phases. “We have recommended our clients to get into Nifty ETFs. We sense that Here’s a good time to buy ETFs, accumulate them on volatile days like such,” he said. He highlighted that the India VIX, a measure of market volatility, hasn’t surged to new highs despite the recent gap-down, indicating that fear levels aren’t escalating dramatically.

Two Stock Recommendations to Watch

Sharma’s analysis extends beyond index-level observations to specific stock recommendations. His “high conviction” pick is ONGC, citing rising oil prices and a favorable technical setup. According to Sharma, “Oil prices are boiling. ONGC should benefit from this and ONGC technical setup is also very good.” He suggests buying the stock around current levels, with a positional target of Rs 300 within the next 15-20 trading sessions and a stop-loss order placed at 258.

The second stock highlighted by Sharma is Tata Power. He noted the strength in the power sector, with Tata Power holding up well despite the broader market weakness. He expects short-term upside in the stock, suggesting it could see a gain of around 5% to 6% in the very near term. This recommendation is based on the stock’s resilience during a market downturn, indicating underlying strength.

Key Technical Levels and Cautions

Looking at technical indicators, Sharma identified 23,800 as an immediate retest zone for the Nifty 50. A close above 24,000, he believes, would signal a stronger recovery. He advises caution for traders considering fresh short positions, as the risk-reward ratio is unfavorable around the 23,200 level. Instead, he recommends focusing on accumulating ETFs. He also noted that geopolitical uncertainties, including developments related to former President Trump, continue to be a factor, but much of the negative news flow appears to be already priced into the market, unless there is a significant escalation.

As markets continue to react to global events and economic data, investors will be closely watching these key levels and stock recommendations. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the Nifty 50 can break out of its current trading range and sustain a broader recovery. The next key checkpoint will be observing whether the Nifty can decisively close above the 24,000 level, signaling a potential shift in market sentiment.
