The ocean’s apex predators are facing a new and unsettling, form of pollution: pharmaceutical and recreational drugs. A recent study published in the journal Environmental Pollution reveals that sharks off the coast of the Bahamas are accumulating substances like cocaine, caffeine, and common painkillers in their systems. The findings raise concerns about the broader impact of human activity on marine ecosystems and the health of these vital creatures, highlighting how even remote environments are not immune to the consequences of pollution.
Researchers analyzed blood samples from 85 sharks representing several species – including tiger sharks, blacktip sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, Atlantic nurse sharks, and lemon sharks – captured near Eleuthera Island. The analysis detected four contaminants: caffeine, cocaine, acetaminophen, and diclofenac. A total of 28 sharks across three species tested positive for at least one of these substances, with caffeine being the most prevalent. Notably, one juvenile lemon shark sampled from a nursery creek showed traces of cocaine, according to the study.
While the presence of these drugs in sharks is alarming, scientists believe the primary source isn’t intentional feeding, but rather runoff and discharge from human activity. Natascha Wosnick, a biologist with the Federal University of Paraná in Brazil and a lead researcher on the project, points to divers as a significant contributor. “It’s mostly because people are going there, peeing in the water and dumping their sewage in the water,” Wosnick explained, as reported by Science News. Currents also carry drug traces from sewage and other sources, further contaminating the marine environment.
A Growing Problem of Pharmaceutical Pollution
This isn’t an isolated incident. Researchers have previously documented the presence of drugs in sharks. In 2024, a study found that 13 blacktip sharks off the coast of Rio de Janeiro were contaminated with cocaine. The increasing detection of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs in marine life underscores a growing global issue: pharmaceutical pollution. These compounds, often released through wastewater treatment plants, can disrupt the endocrine systems of aquatic animals, impacting their reproduction, growth, and behavior. The Bahamas study is the first to report the presence of caffeine and acetaminophen in sharks globally, and the first to identify diclofenac and cocaine in sharks from the islands, according to The Tribune.
Impact on Shark Health and Ecosystems
The long-term consequences of drug exposure on shark populations remain largely unknown. Researchers are investigating how these substances interact with the sharks’ physiology. Tracy Fanara, an oceanographer at the University of Florida, noted that the presence of pharmaceuticals and drugs can alter metabolic markers in sharks, leading to changes related to stress and metabolism. The study analyzed biochemical markers commonly used to assess the physiological health of vertebrates, including triglycerides, cholesterol, phosphorus, lactate, and urea, to gain insights into metabolic, osmotic, renal, and hepatic functions.
Sharks play a critical role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. As apex predators, they regulate populations of other species, preventing any single species from becoming dominant. Compromising their health through pollution could have cascading effects throughout the food web, potentially leading to ecosystem instability.
