Indian River High School’s boys’ volleyball team is poised to build on a promising 2025 season, aiming to translate last year’s momentum into a deeper playoff run. The team finished with a 9-6 record, highlighted by a mid-season surge that saw them win six consecutive matches and seven out of eight, securing a spot in the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) playoffs. While their postseason journey was cut short with a 3-0 loss to eventual state champion Salesianum School, the experience has fueled a renewed sense of purpose for the upcoming season.
Head coach Mike Markovic, entering his third year at the helm, emphasized the importance of continuous improvement. “We had a successful season in 2025,” Markovic said. “Most importantly, we improved our skills throughout the season and played to our potential.” The team’s success wasn’t just about wins and losses; it was about fostering a culture of growth and dedication, a foundation they intend to strengthen as they prepare for a competitive 2026 campaign.
A key component of that growth will be the leadership of returning players, particularly senior Zach Hirn. Hirn, a setter, earned Second Team All-State honors last year, demonstrating exceptional court awareness and precision with a 98 percent serve percentage and 360 assists. His ability to orchestrate the offense will be crucial to the team’s success. Alongside Hirn, senior Amor “A.C.” Townsend is expected to be a dominant force as an outside hitter, bringing both defensive prowess and offensive firepower.
Building on Strengths: Key Returners and Rising Talent
Beyond Hirn and Townsend, the Indians will rely on the experience of seniors Bruce Sarafa, a rightside hitter, and Jeyson Moussa, another setter. Markovic highlighted Townsend’s development, stating, “Amor has developed into an excellent outside hitter who will lead our team with his outstanding defense and spectacular offense.” The coaching staff is looking for these seasoned players to not only contribute individually but likewise to mentor the younger members of the team.
Juniors Shane Forjan and Noah Nayden are poised to develop significant contributions as middle blockers. Markovic believes their aggressive attacking style and strong blocking abilities will be pivotal. “They both have developed into very strong middle blockers,” he explained. “Their ability to aggressively attack the ball and put up a dominant block will be a major contributor to our team’s success.” Developing a strong presence at the net will be essential for controlling the tempo of matches and disrupting opponents’ attacks.
Addressing gaps left by graduating players, the coaching staff is looking to seniors Andres Lucenti and Moussa, along with junior Lucas Mahaffey, to solidify the back-court defense. A reliable back row is critical for transitioning from defense to offense and preventing opponents from scoring easy points.
New Faces and a Focus on Fundamentals
The team has also welcomed new talent, including senior Lucas De Los Rios, who Markovic praised for his quick learning and athleticism. “Senior Lucas De Los Rios has joined our team this year, and he has proven to be a quick learner,” Markovic said. “He will help us with his athleticism as an outside hitter.” Integrating new players seamlessly into the team dynamic will be a key focus during the preseason.
Sophomore John Lovellette and juniors Aidin Schaub and Rafael Terrones Cruz, who excelled on the junior varsity team last year, are expected to contribute on the varsity level as front-row players. Their transition to the higher level of competition will be closely monitored, and the coaching staff will work to maximize their potential.
Markovic, assisted by Jay Clark and Chad Zook, understands that success hinges on more than just individual talent. “We expect strong front-row play from this group of players,” he said. “Although, our overall team success will require capable defense and serve-receive achievements. If You can meet this challenge, I believe we can qualify for the DIAA postseason tournament, along with the best teams in Delaware.”
Looking Ahead: Season Opener and Beyond
