COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina Gamecocks men’s basketball team faces a significant shift in its roster plans as freshman guard Eli Ellis has announced his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to a report from On3’s Joe Tipton. The move, confirmed by The State, leaves a void in the team’s potential for the 2026-27 season and marks the second departure from the program since the complete of the season.
Ellis’ decision comes less than two weeks after the Gamecocks concluded a challenging season with a 13-19 overall record and a 4-15 mark in SEC play. The team, under fourth-year head coach Lamont Paris, struggled to find consistency throughout the year, finishing 13th in the conference standings. The transfer portal officially opens on April 7 and will remain open for players to enter until April 21, providing Ellis with a window to explore other opportunities.
During his freshman campaign, Ellis averaged 8.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 26.8 minutes per game. While primarily a reserve, he provided a spark off the bench and showcased flashes of potential. His most notable performance came on November 9 against Southern Mississippi, where he tallied 20 points, seven rebounds, and two assists in a hard-fought overtime victory. He served as a key backup to the senior guard trio of Meechie Johnson, Mike Sharavjamts, and Kobe Knox.
Prior to arriving at South Carolina, Ellis was a highly-regarded four-star recruit according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He received scholarship offers from several prominent programs, including Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and Wake Forest, before ultimately committing to the Gamecocks. The departure is further complicated by the recent decommitment of his younger brother, Isaac Ellis, from the program in November. Isaac Ellis subsequently committed to Louisville and is expected to join the Cardinals for the 2027-28 season.
Beyond his on-court contributions, Ellis has cultivated a significant social media presence, amassing over 2.1 million followers across Instagram and TikTok. His father, Jeremy Ellis, told USA Today that his son’s name, image, and likeness (NIL) earnings have been substantial, to the point where he could “retire now” if he chose to.
Ellis joins junior forward Elijah Strong as the second Gamecock to announce his intention to transfer. Strong revealed his plans on March 20, further thinning the team’s frontcourt depth. Currently, seven other South Carolina players with remaining eligibility have yet to publicly announce their plans for the 2026-27 season. Six players – Eli Sparkman, Kobe Knox, Meechie Johnson, Mike Sharavjamts, Myles Stute, and Nordin Kapic – have exhausted their eligibility and will not return.
Looking Ahead: Gamecocks Roster Outlook
The departures of Ellis and Strong leave coach Paris with significant roster decisions to produce during the offseason. The Gamecocks will need to address the need for guard play and frontcourt depth through recruiting, the transfer portal, and the development of current players. The team’s success in the transfer portal will be crucial in rebuilding a competitive roster for the upcoming season.

The team’s ability to attract experienced players could significantly impact their competitiveness in the SEC. The NCAA transfer window closes on April 21, providing a definitive timeline for roster construction.
South Carolina’s coaching staff is actively evaluating potential transfer targets and will likely prioritize players who can contribute immediately. The focus will be on finding individuals who fit the team’s offensive and defensive schemes, as well as those who can provide leadership and experience.
