The Block’s Robby & Mat Shave for Blood Cancer Awareness | World’s Greatest Shave

by Grace Chen

Adelaide residents Robby and Mat, known for their appearances on the reality television show The Block, are trading their toolbelts for trimmers as they prepare to participate in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. Their decision is a deeply personal one, born from a close friendship with fellow builder Dave Reidy, who recently suffered the devastating loss of his wife, Carly, to blood cancer. The pair’s participation aims to raise both awareness and crucial funds for Australians battling this challenging disease.

The impact of Carly’s diagnosis and subsequent passing resonated deeply with Robby and Mat, who witnessed firsthand the emotional and physical toll the illness took on Dave and his young son, Gene. Dave shared the heartbreaking news of Carly’s diagnosis while still filming Season 21 of The Block in 2025, a moment that profoundly affected both the cast and viewers. Just five months later, Carly succumbed to the aggressive illness, leaving a void in the lives of those who knew her.

A Sudden Diagnosis, A Swift Battle

Carly Reidy was 45 years old when she received a diagnosis of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-cell ALL) in May 2025, according to the Leukaemia Foundation. B-cell ALL is a rapidly progressing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Prior to her illness, Carly was a dedicated author and was pursuing a Master of Education degree with aspirations of becoming a secondary school teacher, all while raising her seven-year-old son.

Initially, Carly’s symptoms were subtle – fatigue and unexplained bruising – but quickly escalated, leading to the shocking diagnosis. She underwent months of intensive chemotherapy treatment at Geelong University Hospital, but unfortunately, the cancer proved resistant to treatment. Dave Reidy described the experience as a whirlwind, emphasizing the speed and aggression of the disease.

“Her blood cancer was very quick and aggressive and ultimately took her life – my son and I were blindsided by it,” Dave said in a statement released through the Leukaemia Foundation.

Solidarity Through Shaving

Mat, speaking about the decision to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave, emphasized the profound impact witnessing Dave’s journey had on him and Robby. “Watching what Dave and his family went through changed everything for us,” he said. “Shaving my head is such a little thing compared to what people facing blood cancer endure, but if it helps raise awareness and funds, then it’s absolutely worth it.”

Robby echoed this sentiment, stating, “We’re doing this for Carly, for Dave and Gene, and for every family in Australia going through this and facing devastating loss like they have.” He hopes their gesture will inspire others to support the cause and contribute to vital research.

The World’s Greatest Shave: A Long-Standing Tradition

The World’s Greatest Shave, now in its 28th year, is a cornerstone fundraising event for the Leukaemia Foundation. The organization reports that approximately 20,000 Australians participate annually, with over 2 million people having taken part or donated since its inception, raising more than $300 million. This year, the Leukaemia Foundation aims to raise an additional $12 million, citing a concerning rise in blood cancer incidence across all age groups. The World’s Greatest Shave is a critical component of the foundation’s efforts to support individuals and families affected by blood cancer.

According to Leukaemia Foundation CEO Chris Tanti, the funds raised are vital for providing essential services, including accommodation for families traveling for treatment, transportation assistance, and access to information and emotional support. “It also allows us to invest in vital blood cancer research that will lead to better treatments, better outcomes and, fewer Australians like Carly losing their life to the disease in the future,” Tanti stated.

Currently, more than 170,000 Australians are living with blood cancer1, and many experience hair loss as a side effect of treatment. The World’s Greatest Shave not only raises funds but also serves as a visible demonstration of solidarity with those undergoing treatment.

How to Support the Cause

Robby and Mat are encouraging Australians to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave in any way they can – whether by shaving their heads, cutting or coloring their hair, or simply making a donation. “This is about standing with people who don’t have a choice. If shaving your head can give someone hope, start a conversation, or help fund life-saving research, then it’s a no-brainer,” Mat said.

The Leukaemia Foundation will continue to accept donations and host events throughout March as part of the World’s Greatest Shave campaign. Updates on fundraising totals and event details will be posted on their website.
