The differences between men and women

The first hour can be followed live on NPO Radio 1. Then, among others, Rector Magnificus Prof. Dr. Cisca Wijmenga will sit down to talk about Groningen University. The University of Groningen is one of the oldest – and with 35,000 students also one of the largest – universities in the Netherlands. Wijmenga is the first female rector since 1614. How is the university doing in these modern times? Wijmenga conducts its own research into our intestines and hereditary disorders. How hereditary is gluten intolerance?

In the second hour we debate with (among others) the Groningen scientist Iris Sommer about the differences between men and women (or are there none?). Sommer is professor of cognitive aspects of neurological and psychiatric disorders. She has published more than 250 articles on hallucinations, language, cognition and psychosis.

In addition, Sommer carefully studied the brains of women and published the results in her book The Women’s Brain. According to Sommer, that brain is about 12 percent smaller, and there are even more differences with the brains of men. But luckily: that smaller female head does not lead to a lower IQ…
