Elections in Colombia: What do the polls say a few days before the vote? | Colombians elect president

by time news

The main Colombian pollsters agree on one thing: Gustavo Petroof the leftist Historical Pact, will go to the second round in the presidential elections on Sunday 29.

However, what is not clear is who will accompany Petro to that second round that will take place on Sunday, June 19.

The right-wing candidate, supported by the government, Federico “Fico” Gutierrezfrom the Equipo por Colombia coalition, stagnated in the intention to vote and today it is not entirely certain that it will go to the second round as expected a month ago.

In that period of time, the businessman and former mayor of Bucaramanga, Rodolfo Hernandez (League of Anticorruption Governors), also on the right, had strong growth that puts it close to giving one of the surprises of this election.

In the elections on Sunday 29, there are six candidates to govern the country. The winner will be the one who obtains half plus one of the total votes. If this does not happen, there will be a second between the two candidates with the highest number of votes.

Saturday the 21st was the last day that the pollsters could publish their surveys. Reports show that of the six presidential formulas, only three have a chance of going to a second round.

The public opinion polls were also key when two candidates dropped out of the competition when the ballots that the almost 40 million Colombians who will vote on Sunday were already printed. Luis Pérez from Colombia Piensa en Grande, a centrist party, and Ingrid Bentancourt from the centrist party, Verde Oxígeno, did not exceed 1% of voting intentions in several surveys.
