The National Institutes of Health defines endocrine disruptors as chemicals that interfere with the body’s endocrine system, which regulates hormones. A study published in ScienceDirect examined ten types of bisphenols in bras and underwear manufactured in China. Researchers identified BPA, BPS, and BPF in these garments, with higher concentrations found in darker-colored items. This suggests that dyes and pigments used in the manufacturing process may contribute to the presence of these chemicals.

Further investigation by ChemTrust, in collaboration with consumer organizations from the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, and Slovenia, evaluated 116 underwear products. The study revealed that 30% of the tested items contained bisphenols, and 10% exceeded safety levels established by regulatory bodies. Notably, the highest concentrations were found in well-known brands, highlighting that price or reputation doesn’t necessarily equate to safety in this regard.

Health Risks Associated with Bisphenol Exposure

Underwear presents a unique exposure pathway due to its prolonged and direct contact with sensitive skin. The genital area is particularly susceptible to absorption, allowing chemicals to enter the bloodstream more readily. Synthetic fabrics like polyester, polyamide (nylon), and elastane (spandex) are more likely to contain bisphenols than natural fibers like cotton.

While completely eliminating exposure is challenging, We find steps consumers can take to reduce their risk. Washing recent underwear before wearing it can reduce bisphenol content by an average of 74%, although it doesn’t eliminate it entirely. Choosing underwear made from natural, unbleached cotton is likewise a proactive measure. Looking for certifications like OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which indicates that a product has been tested for harmful substances, can also be helpful.

The issue extends beyond women’s underwear. Similar concerns are being raised about the materials used in men’s underwear and athletic wear, prompting ongoing research into the potential impact on testicular health and reproductive function.

As awareness of these potential risks grows, consumers are increasingly demanding greater transparency from manufacturers regarding the chemicals used in clothing production. Regulatory bodies are also under pressure to establish stricter safety standards and labeling requirements to protect public health.
