Mahinda has not sought safe haven: Nasheed | ‘Mahinda Rajapaksa did not seek asylum’

Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, resigned on the 9th due to intense public protests. As well as violence across the country his security was threatened.

The local media reported that Rajapaksa had sought refuge in the Maldives for himself and his family. But former Maldivian President Mohammed Nasheed has denied that Mahinda Rajapaksa sought asylum in the Maldives.

Speaking to reporters in Colombo yesterday, he said such false news was a conspiracy to destabilize relations between the two countries. He said, ‘This is completely false news. Nasheed said he had not met Mahinda Rajapaksa during his visit to Sri Lanka. How could the Maldives help the economic crisis? He also said that he came to Sri Lanka to discuss the issue.
