24 New Deep-Sea Species Discovered Before Potential Mining Begins

The deep seafloor, long viewed as a remote and largely barren landscape, is revealing itself to be a surprisingly vibrant ecosystem. A recent discovery of 24 new species of amphipods – tiny, shrimp-like crustaceans – in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) highlights just how much remains unknown about this vast underwater realm. The findings, published in ZooKeys, are particularly striking given that the CCZ is currently being considered for deep-sea mining operations, raising urgent questions about the potential impact on these newly identified creatures and the fragile habitat they call home.

The CCZ, a sprawling region between Hawaii and Mexico, lies at depths of 4,000 to 5,500 meters. It’s rich in manganese nodules – potato-sized rocks containing valuable metals like nickel, cobalt, and copper – essential components in batteries and renewable energy technologies. However, these nodules aren’t simply geological formations. they form the base of a complex ecosystem, supporting a diverse array of life adapted to the extreme pressures, perpetual darkness, and frigid temperatures of the abyss. The recent discoveries underscore the biological richness of this area, challenging the long-held assumption that it’s a relatively empty space.

A New Branch on the Tree of Life

For years, scientists have collected samples from the CCZ, but a lack of funding and resources for detailed analysis meant that much of the life found there remained unnamed, and unstudied. The sheer volume of undiscovered species is staggering: over 5,500 species have been recorded in the region, yet approximately 90% are currently unknown to science. This lack of formal identification presents a significant challenge for conservation efforts, as species without names cannot be legally protected or included in broader ecological strategies.

To address this knowledge gap, an intensive workshop was held at the University of Lodz in Poland in February 2024. Led by Dr. Anna Jażdżewska of the University of Lodz (UL) and Tammy Horton of the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), the workshop brought together 16 experts – eight established researchers and eight students – for a ten-day sprint to describe as many new species as possible from existing sample collections. The effort was part of the “One Thousand Reasons” campaign, initiated by the International Seabed Authority (ISA), which aims to formally describe 1,000 new deep-sea species by the end of the decade. The ISA is the intergovernmental organization responsible for regulating deep-sea mining in international waters.

The team employed a range of advanced techniques, including traditional microscopy, laser-scanning microscopy to create detailed 3D images, fluorescent dyes to highlight anatomical features, and DNA barcoding to confirm the distinctiveness of each new species. Their focused approach on amphipods, crustaceans lacking a carapace, yielded remarkable results. Before the workshop, only 13 amphipod species were known from the CCZ, primarily scavengers feeding on organic matter sinking from the surface. The Lodz team, however, concentrated on the non-scavengers – the creatures that inhabit the sediment and nodules themselves.

Unveiling the Diversity of the Abyss

The diversity of the 24 newly described species is remarkable, representing 11 different families and encompassing a range of ecological roles, from predatory hunters to tiny organisms that sift through the mud for food. Among the discoveries are Astyra mclaughlinae, a new record holder as the deepest and most tropical member of its genus, and Pardalisca magdalenae, which now holds the global record for the deepest-living member of its genus. Each new name represents a crucial step in understanding the complex web of life in the CCZ.

However, the most extraordinary locate is undoubtedly Mirabestia maisie. This unique creature is so different from any known amphipod that scientists were compelled to create an entirely new superfamily and family to accommodate it within the tree of life. Its distinctive conical mouthparts are unlike anything previously observed in the group. Remarkably, Mirabestia maisie appears to be relatively common in the CCZ, with researchers finding over 25 specimens, suggesting it plays a significant role in the local ecosystem.

These discoveries highlight a critical dilemma: we are making decisions about potentially large-scale industrial activity – deep-sea mining – in an area we demonstrably do not fully understand. The ISA is currently developing regulations for deep-sea mining, with commercial exploitation potentially beginning as early as 2025, though the timeline remains subject to ongoing debate and environmental concerns. The “One Thousand Reasons” campaign represents a crucial effort to accelerate the cataloging of deep-sea biodiversity before irreversible damage occurs. The success of the Lodz workshop demonstrates the potential for rapid progress when resources are focused on taxonomic research. But the pace of discovery must accelerate to preserve up with the growing interest in exploiting the resources of the deep seafloor. The next major milestone for the campaign is the planned publication of further research based on samples collected from additional CCZ expeditions, expected throughout 2026.
