Surrey Shooting: 27-Year-Old Man Killed in Sullivan Heights, IHIT Investigates

by Ethan Brooks

A 27-year-ancient man is dead following a shooting in Surrey, British Columbia, on Saturday evening, prompting a homicide investigation. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is leading the investigation, which began after Surrey Police Service officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 15100 block of 60 Avenue around 6:39 p.m. PT. The victim has been identified as Jasman Sekhon, and investigators believe the shooting was targeted, linked to organized crime and the drug trade.

According to IHIT, Sekhon was found with gunshot wounds and died at the scene despite efforts to save him. Police confirmed Sekhon had prior interactions with law enforcement. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are seeking information from the public to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.

Neighbourhood Shocked by Violence

The shooting occurred in the Sullivan Heights neighbourhood, an area typically known for its quiet residential character. Surrey Councillor Linda Annis expressed her shock and concern, stating, “I’m absolutely shocked at the news of this latest shooting. This is a quiet residential neighbourhood. We all need to be able to feel safe in our neighbourhoods, and when we’re either at home, at work, or on the streets. And this clearly defies all of that.”

Residents reported witnessing a dark SUV fleeing the scene, with two individuals exiting the vehicle and opening fire. The incident has understandably shaken the community, raising questions about public safety and the increasing prevalence of violence in Surrey.

Vehicle Found Ablaze, Potential Link to Shooting

Approximately 15 minutes after the shooting, a blue Hyundai SUV was discovered engulfed in flames several blocks away, in the area of 186th Street and 44 Avenue. IHIT investigators are working to determine if the burned vehicle is connected to the homicide. The proximity in time and location has led investigators to believe a link is possible, though this remains unconfirmed.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area between 6:00 p.m. And 7:30 p.m. On Saturday to come forward with information or dashcam footage. “Investigators are looking for witnesses and video evidence,” Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT said in a statement. “Any information, no matter how small it may seem, could be crucial to solving this case.”

Surrey’s Ongoing Concerns with Violent Crime

This shooting is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Surrey, fueling ongoing concerns about public safety. The city has been grappling with a rise in gang-related activity and shootings in recent years. In 2023, Surrey saw a significant number of shootings, many of which were linked to ongoing conflicts between rival groups involved in the drug trade, according to CBC News.

Councillor Annis has been a vocal advocate for increased resources for the Surrey Police Service, specifically calling for real-time access to the city’s network of surveillance cameras. “And one of the things that I’ve been advocating for is giving the Surrey police service real-time access to all of our city cameras. Right now, they don’t have that. And when incidents like this occur, it would be absolutely incredible if the Surrey Police Service could have real-time access,” she stated.
