But for many, simply getting through the day feels like a monumental task, and meeting even basic nutritional needs can seem impossible when appetite wanes, tastes change, or nausea persists. It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed, but prioritizing protein is crucial. Cancer and its treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, trigger protein breakdown within the body, demanding increased intake to support tissue repair, bolster immune function, preserve muscle mass, and protect against debilitating conditions like cancer-related cachexia – a wasting syndrome accompanied by physical stress.
Understanding why protein matters is the first step. But equally critical is knowing how much you demand and, increasingly, where that protein comes from. Current dietary guidelines recommend 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily for healthy adults. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, updated in 2020, reflect a growing understanding of protein’s role in overall health. Still, for individuals undergoing cancer treatment, this higher intake was already the standard of care. Research published in the journal Clinical Nutrition demonstrates that consuming more than 1.4 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight is linked to better preservation of muscle mass during treatment, while intake below 1.2 grams per kilogram is associated with muscle loss.
For the average adult, this translates to roughly 75 to 110 grams of protein per day. A 150-pound individual, for example, might aim for 85 to 100 grams, distributed throughout the day in portions of 25 to 30 grams per meal. While meeting these targets can feel daunting, a shift towards plant-based protein sources offers not only nutritional benefits but also potential long-term health advantages.
Why Plant Protein Takes Center Stage
As a lifestyle medicine physician, I emphasize that simply reaching a protein target isn’t enough; the source of that protein is equally vital. Research consistently demonstrates that prioritizing plant-based proteins over animal-based proteins can improve cardiometabolic health, reduce cancer mortality, and support longevity. Plant proteins are naturally lower in saturated fat and richer in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals – nutrients that play a critical role in supporting the body during and after cancer treatment.
The impact of this shift can be surprisingly significant. Studies show that replacing even just 3 percent of daily calories from animal protein with plant protein is associated with a lower risk of dying from cancer. This seemingly modest change – swapping beef for lentils in a chili, for instance, or choosing tofu over chicken in a stir-fry – can have a measurable effect.
Spotlight on Soy and Lentils
My top recommendation for plant-based protein is soy. Often unfairly maligned, whole soy foods like edamame, tofu, and tempeh offer a complete protein source, providing approximately 20 grams of protein per cup for tofu and 18 grams per cup for edamame, along with roughly 8 grams of fiber in edamame. Importantly, research suggests that whole soy foods are associated with a lower risk of breast cancer and reduced recurrence in survivors.
Beyond cancer risk, soy offers additional benefits for survivors. Metabolic changes, such as high cholesterol or treatment-induced menopause leading to hot flashes, are common side effects of cancer treatment. Soy has been shown to improve cholesterol levels and may help reduce vasomotor symptoms like hot flashes, making it a particularly valuable protein source during cancer survivorship.
Lentils are another protein staple I frequently recommend. One cup provides approximately 18 grams of protein and 16 grams of fiber, making them incredibly nutrient-dense. Lentils are widely available, affordable, and easy to prepare, blending seamlessly into soups, sauces, and dips. They are also generally easier to digest than other legumes, a significant advantage for those experiencing treatment-related digestive issues.
Navigating Protein Intake When Eating is Difficult
Cancer treatment frequently brings side effects that make eating challenging – poor appetite, altered taste, nausea, and vomiting are all common. Even the act of eating itself can feel exhausting. Strategies that proved helpful for my palliative care patients focused on adapting to these challenges.
- Smaller, More Frequent Meals: Instead of three large meals, opt for smaller portions throughout the day, resembling heavy snacks.

Prioritizing plant-based proteins offers the added benefits of fiber, essential nutrients, and potential long-term cancer risk reduction. This isn’t a time for rigid rules or Instagram-worthy plates. It’s about meeting your body where it is, whether that means relying on a smoothie, a bowl of soup, or simply a handful of edamame at a time.
