IBM Expands FedRAMP Authorization to 11 AI & Automation Solutions on AWS GovCloud

by Mark Thompson

IBM has significantly expanded its offerings for the U.S. Federal government, receiving authorization from the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) for 11 software solutions, including key components of its watsonx artificial intelligence portfolio. This move underscores a growing demand for secure and compliant AI tools within government agencies and highlights IBM’s strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to accelerate the delivery of these capabilities. The authorizations, announced April 1, 2026, represent a four-fold increase in IBM’s FedRAMP-authorized portfolio within a single year, signaling a major commitment to the U.S. Federal market.

FedRAMP authorization is a rigorous process, ensuring cloud systems meet stringent security standards required by federal agencies. The newly authorized solutions are deployed exclusively on AWS GovCloud (U.S.), a region specifically designed to meet the compliance and security needs of the public sector. This arrangement allows agencies to leverage advanced AI and automation technologies without the burden of managing the underlying infrastructure themselves. The increasing focus on secure AI adoption within the government is driven by the need to modernize operations, improve decision-making and enhance citizen services, all although protecting sensitive data.

“Federal agencies need reliable, secure ways to harness the power of advanced AI and automation capabilities,” said Vanessa Hunt, General Manager, Technology, U.S. Federal Market, IBM. “Obtaining authorization for these 11 software solutions within a single year constitutes a four-fold increase in IBM’s FedRAMP portfolio, and underscores both our commitment to meeting the evolving technology needs of U.S. Federal agencies and our ongoing investment in the U.S. Federal market. Through our strategic collaboration with AWS, we were able to accelerate delivery of compliant, mission-ready capabilities. It’s a major milestone, and the beginning of a broader effort to bring more IBM AI-powered capabilities into compliant government environments.”

Expanding AI Capabilities for Government Missions

The 11 newly authorized solutions span IBM’s AI and Automation Services for Government portfolio, offering a range of tools designed to address diverse agency needs. At the core of this expansion is the watsonx platform, IBM’s AI and data platform designed for the enterprise. Specifically, watsonx.ai, which provides access to foundation models like IBM Granite and open-source options like Llama, is now FedRAMP authorized. These foundation models are crucial for building and deploying custom AI applications tailored to specific government use cases. The authorization also extends to watsonx.governance, a tool designed to manage risk and ensure compliance throughout the AI lifecycle – a critical consideration for federal deployments.

Beyond watsonx, the authorized solutions include tools for data management and integration. watsonx.data (excluding premium features) offers a governed data lakehouse, while watsonx.data integration (DataStage standalone) streamlines data cleaning and transformation. These capabilities are essential for ensuring data quality and accessibility, which are foundational to effective AI applications. Rounding out the AI offerings are watsonx.data intelligence for data analysis and watsonx Orchestrate for automating workflows.

Automation and Security Solutions Join the Portfolio

The FedRAMP authorizations aren’t limited to AI. IBM’s automation suite also received key approvals, including Verify, a solution for identity and access management, and Turbonomic, which uses AI to optimize application resource management. Security and operational efficiency are paramount for federal agencies, and these tools address those needs directly. Instana provides real-time visibility into applications and infrastructure, aiding in rapid issue resolution, while Concert offers AI-driven insights into application risks. Finally, Maximo Application Suite provides integrated lifecycle management for critical assets.

Strategic Collaboration with AWS Drives Momentum

The rapid expansion of IBM’s FedRAMP portfolio is directly linked to its strategic collaboration agreement (SCA) with Amazon Web Services. Amy Belcher, Director, Worldwide Public Sector ISV Sales, AWS, stated, “This strategic collaboration with IBM marks a significant milestone in our shared commitment to delivering secure, mission-ready AI solutions for federal agencies. Together, we’re helping government organizations modernize at the speed of mission while maintaining the security, compliance, and reliability that critical operations require.” The SCA includes investments aimed at accelerating the delivery of compliant AI and automation solutions, leveraging the security and scalability of AWS GovCloud. This partnership demonstrates a broader industry trend of collaboration to meet the complex needs of the public sector.

IBM’s long history of working with the U.S. Federal government – from early computing projects like the first computerized census to supporting space exploration – positions it as a trusted partner for digital transformation. The company’s commitment to security and compliance, combined with its innovative AI and automation technologies, makes it a key player in helping agencies navigate the challenges of the modern digital landscape. The FedRAMP authorizations represent not just a technical achievement, but a continuation of a century-long relationship built on trust and innovation.

Looking ahead, IBM and AWS plan to continue expanding the portfolio of FedRAMP-authorized solutions, bringing more AI-powered capabilities to government agencies. The next step involves ongoing monitoring and compliance checks to maintain the authorizations and exploring new opportunities to integrate IBM’s technologies with AWS GovCloud. Further details on upcoming authorizations and collaborative initiatives are expected to be released in the coming months.
