“Secrets in the Backyard” is a new mini-crime series starring the great Olivia Coleman and David Theolis, and that in itself is a reason to watch the series. But we will not stop here, of course. The series does not flatter viewers, and makes this incredible story accessible in all its complexity. Already in the opening episode, we get a glimpse into the future, Susan and Christopher were arrested, tried, and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
What’s more, already in the first episode, throughout the series, you will discover a particularly surprising element – the breaking of the fourth wall. A move that series do not tend to make, certainly not in the current era. “Secrets in the Backyard” is undoubtedly a brave and different series in the local landscape, and it skips between past and present, photography styles, and various elements.
Beneath all this beauty, lies the couple’s tragic story, and is in fact the heart of the entire series. The two present a game display from the finest seen on the small screen in the past year. They manage to evoke disgust, hatred, empathy, compassion, and another wide range of emotions, befitting such a complex story.
“Backyard Secrets” seeks to undermine the fine line between fiction and reality, it does not present the viewer with the answer on a tray of money, it makes him think, and even sometimes wonder what is right and what is not. And most importantly, it tells the story of a married couple who went so far as to get involved, all in a mesmerizing, clever and sweeping way.
