Four Killed in Capão da Canoa Plane Crash During Test Flight

The grief of a blended family has spilled onto social media as the children of a couple killed in a small plane crash in Rio Grande do Sul plead for strength and spiritual support. In a series of heartbreaking posts, the family is struggling to comprehend a tragedy that claimed the lives of four people on a flight that was meant to be a simple business demonstration.

Déborah Belanda Ortolani and Luis Antonio Ortolani were among those killed when their aircraft went down in Capão da Canoa, located in the Litoral Norte region of Rio Grande do Sul, on the morning of Friday, April 3. The accident occurred shortly after takeoff from the local aerodrome, around 10:40 a.m., when the plane plummeted onto a restaurant that was fortunately undergoing renovations at the time.

The tragedy has left a void in a family characterized by deep bonds despite not sharing biological children. Déborah was the mother of triplets, even as Luis had a son and a grandson. Together, they had built a life centered on partnership and a shared professional passion for the events industry.

For the children, the loss is an incomprehensible rupture. Felipe Belanda, one of Déborah’s sons, used his digital platforms to acknowledge the wave of support while asking for continued intercession for his grieving relatives. “Thank you to everyone who is sending messages. I spot you. I honor you. Pray for our family. Pray for those who have gone. Now I know how it is. The pain is enormous! You will be missed so much!” Felipe wrote.

A ‘Nightmare’ in the Litoral Norte

While some find solace in faith, others are grappling with the raw shock of the event. Fabricio Belanda, another of Déborah’s children, described his current existence as a living nightmare, expressing a desperate wish to wake up from the reality of losing both his mother and stepfather.

A 'Nightmare' in the Litoral Norte

“Life robbed you from me, took away my ground, my safe harbor; I am still unable to understand why, you did not deserve this, much less in this way! I love and will always love you, until my last breath! You will always be with me in memory and in my heart! I just wanted to wake up from this nightmare,” Fabricio shared.

The devastation extends to the next generation of the family. Juline Teixeira, Fabricio’s partner and the couple’s daughter-in-law, echoed the sentiment that the family has lost its core. She described the couple as the “foundation” and “joy” of their family unit, noting that the tragedy has “crossed through” them all.

The Purpose of the Fatal Flight

The flight was not a routine trip, but a demonstration. According to Peluzzi Aviation, the company responsible for the aircraft, the couple was analyzing the purchase of the plane. The flight served as a test to evaluate the model, which Déborah and Luis were flying for the first time.

The aircraft was similarly carrying businessman Renan Saes and pilot Nelio Maria Batista Pessanha, both of whom perished in the crash. The sequence of events leading to the impact was captured by security cameras and witnessed by locals, showing the aircraft falling almost immediately after departure.

In a somber statement, Peluzzi Aviation expressed its grief over the loss of its partner, Renan Saes, and pilot Nelio Pessanha, while extending condolences to the Ortolani family. The company requested empathy and respect for the bereaved during this period of mourning.

A Legacy of Entrepreneurship and Love

Originally from Ibitinga, São Paulo, Déborah and Luis were well-known in the commercial sector. They managed the Feira de Ibitinga, an itinerant trade fair specializing in bedding, table, and bath linens, inspired by the traditional embroidery fairs of their hometown.

Their professional lives required frequent travel across Brazil, but they had established a home in Xangri-lá, in the Litoral Norte of Rio Grande do Sul, to expand their business operations into the neighboring city of Capão da Canoa.

Friends of the couple remember them not only for their business acumen but for a devotion that seemed inseparable. Fernanda de Matos, an entrepreneur and close friend, noted that the couple’s love was “strong and true,” suggesting that it was perhaps inevitable that they would depart together, as neither could imagine a life without the other.

Final Farewells

The victims will be laid to rest in three different locations, reflecting the diverse roots of those on board. The Ortolani couple will be honored in the city where the accident occurred, while the crew will return to their respective home regions.

The next official update is expected from aviation authorities as they analyze the wreckage and flight data to provide a definitive report on the cause of the accident.
