The “need-to-know” relic must be replaced by a culture of radical context, ensuring that the people building the systems actually understand why those systems exist.

The next major shift in this evolution will likely be the integration of AI-powered internal knowledge graphs, which can surface relevant context to engineers in real-time without requiring a manager to act as the middleman. This will move the industry closer to a state of “ambient awareness,” where the right information finds the right person at the right time.
