One Health Summit: Linking Human, Animal, and Environmental Health

Global health leaders, scientists, and heads of state have converged in Lyon, France, for the One Health Summit to formalize a fundamental shift in how the world prevents the next pandemic. The summit focuses on the One Health concept, an integrated framework that recognizes that the health of humans is inextricably linked to the health of animals and the shared environment.

For decades, medical science has largely operated in silos, treating human pathology as a separate entity from veterinary medicine and environmental ecology. However, the recurring threat of zoonotic spillovers—diseases that jump from animals to humans—has made this fragmented approach obsolete. Experts at the summit argue that the only way to secure human longevity is to ensure the stability of the ecosystems that support all life.

The urgency of this shift is underscored by data from the World Organisation for Animal Health, which notes that approximately 60% of existing human pathogens are zoonotic, originating in either domestic or wild animal populations. By treating these three pillars—human, animal, and environmental health—as a single entity, the One Health approach aims to identify risks at the source before they escalate into global crises.

The Cascade Effect: When Ecosystems Fail

The core of the One Health philosophy is the “cascade effect,” where a disruption in one part of the biological chain triggers a series of failures across others. This is not a theoretical risk but a documented reality. One of the most stark examples cited by biophysicist Jian-Sheng Sun involves the collapse of vulture populations in India.

The decline was triggered by the utilize of an anti-inflammatory drug to treat cattle, which proved lethal to the vultures that scavenged the carcasses. With the natural cleaners gone, animal remains rotted in the open, contaminating drinking water and creating a vacuum filled by feral dogs and rats. This ecological imbalance led to a surge in rabies transmissions, resulting in more than 30,000 human deaths annually in India.

Similar patterns are emerging in Europe. The introduction of the invasive Korean squirrel has raised concerns regarding the spread of Lyme disease. Given that these rodents can carry multiple species of ticks, they act as biological bridges, increasing the risk of transmission to human populations in areas previously considered low-risk.

Climate Change and the Migration of Disease

Environmental degradation and rising global temperatures are acting as catalysts for these biological shifts. As climates warm, the geographical boundaries for disease-carrying vectors are expanding, pushing tropical threats into temperate zones.

These resistant strains do not stay within the farm; they migrate into the soil, the water supply, and the human microbiome. This creates a loop where medicines designed to save human lives develop into ineffective because of how we manage animal health, effectively neutralizing one of the most important tools in modern medicine.

Breaking the Institutional Silos

Implementing a One Health strategy requires more than just scientific agreement; it requires a total overhaul of government and institutional architecture. Currently, ministries of health, agriculture, and environment often operate with separate budgets, different goals, and little communication.

Emmanuel Didier, director of the Medicine-Humanities program at the École normale supérieure, emphasizes that the solution lies in radical collaboration. In a One Health model, a physician would work in tandem with a veterinarian and an agronomist to track a disease’s origin and spread, rather than treating the human patient in isolation from the environment that sickened them.
