21st Amendment coming soon to overthrow Gotabhaya: All party meeting decides

Colombo: An all party meeting has decided to pass the 21st Amendment to the Constitution in Sri Lanka soon. Prices have risen sharply due to the economic downturn in Sri Lanka and people are upset. As a result of their struggle, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned on the 9th and disappeared.

At the same time, all parties are pushing for the overthrow of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Gotabhaya has agreed to this so as not to throw himself out of office. According to Article 20A of the Constitution of Sri Lanka, the President is currently empowered to do so. In order to repeal this law, the 21st Amendment to the Constitution is to be brought.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, the new Prime Minister of the country, held consultations with all party leaders yesterday regarding the implementation of this in Parliament. In this, the Tamil National Alliance was not the only participant. At this meeting it was unanimously decided that this amendment should be passed soon.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that an all-party meeting will be held again on June 3 to add new features and decide on the implementation date of the resolution. He said that the Tamil National Alliance would also attend the meeting that day.

Permission for private import of fuels
The Sri Lankan government has become unable to purchase fuel due to the depletion of foreign exchange reserves in Sri Lanka. It is currently overcoming the shortage with the help of India. In this context, Sri Lankan Energy Minister Kanjana Wijesekera posted on Twitter yesterday, ‘All private petroleum companies in Sri Lanka have been given permission to import and supply petrol and diesel to factories. The move will reduce the burden on Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and petrol stations.
