March 2026 Cable News Ratings: Iran Conflict Drives Viewership Growth

by Mark Thompson

The landscape of American cable news shifted significantly in March 2026, as the onset of United States military action against Iran drove a surge in viewership across the major networks. The geopolitical crisis served as a primary catalyst for growth, bringing millions of viewers back to linear television to track the evolving conflict in real time.

According to the latest cable news ratings for March 2026 from Nielsen’s big data and panel, Fox News maintained its dominant lead in total viewership, while CNN saw the most aggressive year-over-year growth. MS NOW remained a strong second in total volume but faced headwinds in the highly coveted adult demographics.

The volatility of the news cycle in March highlighted a recurring trend in the industry: “event-driven” viewership. When high-stakes military conflicts emerge, the fragmented audience typically coalesces around established news brands, though the distribution of those viewers varies wildly by political lean and age bracket.

For the advertising market, these shifts are critical. The “Adults 25-54” demographic remains the gold standard for ad pricing, and the movement in these numbers often dictates the financial health and programming strategy of the networks.

Fox News Maintains Volume Lead Amid Demographic Shifts

Fox News continued to lead the pack in total viewers, drawing 2.994 million people during primetime. The network saw a notable month-over-month jump, with primetime total viewers increasing by 15% and the A25-54 demo growing by 24% compared to February 2026.

However, a deeper seem at the long-term trend reveals a more complex story. When compared to March 2025, Fox News actually saw a decline, dropping 4% in total primetime viewers and 18% in the A25-54 demo. In the “total day” category, the network recorded a modest 2% gain in total viewers year-over-year but suffered an 18% loss in the demo. This makes Fox News the only major network to record yearly declines in these specific metrics.

Despite these yearly dips, the network’s programming remains a powerhouse. The Five was the most-watched program across all cable news, averaging 3.971 million total viewers and 354,000 viewers in the A25-54 demo. Other top performers included Jesse Watters Primetime and Special Report with Bret Baier, both of which crossed the 3-million-viewer threshold.

CNN’s Aggressive Recovery and MS NOW’s Demo Struggle

CNN emerged as the biggest winner in terms of growth trajectory. The network’s primetime viewership reached 898,000 total viewers, representing a massive 52% increase compared to March 2025. Its performance in the A25-54 demo likewise surged by 45% over the previous year. In “total day” viewing, CNN grew by 48% in total viewers and 41% in the demo year-over-year.

This growth propelled CNN to the No. 5 position in primetime and the No. 4 position during total day for total viewers. Anderson Cooper 360 served as the network’s anchor, leading both total viewers (878,000) and the A25-54 demo (164,000).

MS NOW occupied the middle ground, finishing second in total viewers for both primetime (1.262 million) and total day (757,000). While the network grew 11% in total primetime viewers over February, it experienced a slight 1% dip in the A25-54 demo. The network’s demographic standing took a hit, dropping to 11th place in the primetime demo, tied with Comedy Central.

The Rachel Maddow Show remained the network’s strongest asset, continuing to lead both total viewers (2.27 million) and the demo (251,000) during its Monday 9 p.m. ET slot.

March 2026 Primetime Viewership Comparison
Network Total Viewers Adults 25-54
Fox News 2,994,000 323,000
MS NOW 1,262,000 130,000
CNN 898,000 175,000

The Broader News Ecosystem: Niche Networks and Business News

Beyond the “Big Three,” several smaller networks and business-focused channels carved out specific niches during the Iranian conflict coverage. NewsNation averaged 191,000 primetime viewers, with the Cuomo program leading the network at 255,000 total viewers.

In the business sector, the ratings reflected a mix of market anxiety and a desire for financial guidance. On Fox Business, Varney & Company led in total viewers with 305,000, while Kudlow took the top spot in the A25-54 demo. CNBC’s Fast Money Halftime Report was the most-watched program for that network in total viewers (265,000), while Squawk on the Street dominated the demo with 67,000 viewers.

Newsmax also saw significant engagement, with Rob Schmitt Tonight emerging as the network’s top performer, drawing 382,000 total viewers and 32,000 in the demo.

The disparity in these numbers underscores the current state of media consumption: while a global crisis can drive a general return to cable, the “loyalist” audiences of specific personalities—such as Maddow, Cooper, or the cast of The Five—provide the baseline stability that networks rely on between major breaking news events.

As the military situation in the Middle East continues to evolve, the next major checkpoint for viewership will be the April ratings report, which will indicate whether this surge was a temporary spike or a sustained shift in audience habits. Analysts will be watching closely to see if CNN can maintain its year-over-year momentum or if Fox News can reverse its demographic decline.
