Local Sponsors Donate Volleyball Net to Langenwang Primary School

by Ethan Brooks

Students at the Langenwang primary school have a new reason to head outdoors during their breaks. Thanks to a coordinated effort by nine local sponsors from Langenwang and Mürzzuschlag, the school has installed a professional volleyball net on its playground, providing a permanent fixture for physical activity and team sports.

The equipment, which cost 2,000 euros, was officially inaugurated on a Thursday morning. The event served as both a formal handover and an immediate practical trial, as students were encouraged to test the net as soon as the ceremony concluded.

The initiative was driven by a desire to maximize the utility of the school’s expansive outdoor space. According to School Director Silvia Zeidler, the administration looked for an addition to the playground that could be utilized by students throughout the entire year, leading to the decision to install the volleyball net.

Balancing Digital Learning with Physical Activity

The addition of the sports equipment arrives at a pivotal time for the school’s pedagogical approach. The institution has recently undergone a significant digital transformation, with all eight classes now equipped with digital boards. While these tools enhance modern learning, the school administration is keen to ensure that screen time is balanced with physical movement.

Balancing Digital Learning with Physical Activity

“Alle acht Klassen wurden mit digitalen Tafeln ausgestattet. Als Ausgleich zu diesem digitalen Schwerpunkt passt die Anschaffung des Netzes perfekt,” Zeidler stated, emphasizing the importance of a holistic education that values both technological proficiency and physical health.

This commitment to wellness is not incidental. The Volksschule Langenwang is a recognized network school of Styria Vitalis “Gesunde Schule” (Healthy School) and holds the “Bewegte Schule” (Active School) quality seal, certifications that mandate a focus on integrating movement and health into the daily school routine.

A Community-Driven Investment

The project was made possible through a collaborative funding model involving local businesses and civic leaders. The 2,000 euro cost was covered by nine sponsors, illustrating a strong community tie between the school and the residents of Langenwang and Mürzzuschlag.

The support extended beyond the net itself. During the handover, the parents’ association—represented by Katrin Wagner and Katrin Kropfhofer—donated four new volleyballs to ensure the students had the necessary equipment to begin playing immediately.

To transition the students from curiosity to skill, Sophia Rothwangl from the Langenwang Gymnastics Club (Turnverein Langenwang) provided a practical instructional session for the students of class 4B, teaching them the fundamental techniques of the sport.

The integration of such facilities into the school environment is part of a broader regional effort to combat sedentary lifestyles among children. By providing high-quality, permanent sports equipment, the school ensures that physical activity is not limited to scheduled PE classes but is an organic part of the school day.

With the net now fully operational and the students trained in the basics of the game, the facility will remain a central part of the playground’s recreational offerings. The school continues to operate under the guidelines of the Lower Austrian and Styrian educational frameworks regarding healthy and active schools.

The administration expects the new equipment to be used across all grade levels, promoting social interaction and physical health as the academic year progresses.
