An Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboat attacked a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, causing heavy damage to the vessel’s bridge even as all crew remained safe, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations centre.

The attack occurred hours after U.S. President Donald Trump extended a ceasefire agreement with Iran, which Tehran says the United States has violated by seizing an Iranian commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman.

Iran’s top joint military command, Khatam al-Anbiya, accused the U.S. Of armed piracy and vowed retaliation, state media reported, while Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei called the U.S. Blockade of Iranian ports a war crime and crime against humanity.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil supplies pass, has been fully reclosed by Iran in response to the blockade, Baghaei said on Sunday.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in the eight-week-old Iran war, including at least 3,000 in Iran, 2,290 in Lebanon, 23 in Israel, and over a dozen in Gulf Arab states, according to the Associated Press.

Fifteen Israeli soldiers and 13 U.S. Service members have also died in the conflict, which has seen Israel advance into southern Lebanon amid ongoing U.S.-Israel military coordination against Iran.

Despite Trump ordering U.S. Negotiators to travel to Pakistan for peace talks, Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB said there are currently no plans to attend the next round of negotiations, citing the ongoing blockade as a precondition for any dialogue.

The Fars and Tasnim news agencies earlier warned that the atmosphere for talks cannot be assessed as remarkably positive, while Iran’s official IRNA news agency said there is no clear prospect of fruitful negotiations under current conditions.

Iran’s Nour News, linked to the Revolutionary Guard, defended the attack on the container ship, stating it ignored warnings and was fired upon by Iranian armed forces, resulting in extensive damage.
