Last Wednesday, three MKs flew on a special visit to Northern Ireland, after being invited to attend several seminars around the country’s conflict and ways to resolve a national-religious conflict.
The three Knesset members were the chairman of the Internal Security Committee, Meirav Ben-Ari (Yesh Atid), and two representatives of the opposition: Tzachi Hanegbi (Likud) and Amichai Shikli.
A group of Knesset members took off together on Wednesday and the visit itself ended on Saturday, and the flight back to Israel was planned for that day.
However, MK Shikli announced in advance that although he is not a religious person, he will fly during Shabbat because he says it is a visit as part of their role as Knesset members and it is not worthy of Shabbat space.
The flight of Ben Ari and Hanegbi departed at 17:25 local time, with Shabbat itself departing after 23:00. (The two landed in Israel on Sunday morning)
Shikli stayed, and was not enough for Jerusalem Day
As a result of Shikli’s decision, he took off on a flight that departed only on Sunday morning and landed at Ben Gurion Airport late at night, which, among other things, prevented him from participating in the flag parade in Jerusalem on Sunday.
It should be noted that the delegation was not as an official visit of the Knesset and was an invitation from a local Irish organization, but according to Shikli the flight was in office and their official day of rest should not be respected in Israel.
In response, MK Hanegbi’s office said: “This is not a flight funded by the Knesset and not an event in which MK Hanegbi was asked to represent the Knesset. Of the Knesset (the committee is known to have not yet been established). . “
MK Ben Ari’s office said: “This was not a Knesset delegation but an organization that invited me, Hanegbi and Shikli and the whole trip was at their expense. I respect Shabbat but do not keep Shabbat and it was important for me to be here on Sunday morning for a full working day.”
