“At this point, we are not concerned about a global pandemic,” said Rosamund Lewis, WHO’s chief monkeypox virus expert. “It is still possible to stop this epidemic before it spreads,” Lewis assured.

Since Britain first reported a confirmed case of the virus on May 7, nearly 400 cases have been reported to the WHO in nearly 20 countries not normally affected by the virus.

The WHO added that it is concerned about the “unusual situation”, but reiterated that there is no need to panic.

Related to eradicated smallpox

Monkeypox is related to smallpox, which claimed millions of victims worldwide each year before being eradicated in 1980. However, monkeypox is much less severe and most people recover within three to four weeks.

The first symptoms are a high fever, swollen lymph nodes and a chickenpox-like rash.
