An “alarmingly accurate” internet photo search tool available to everyone

by time news

“For $29.99, a website called PimEyes offers a science fiction superpower that could turn out to be dangerous. It makes it possible to search for a face and find forgotten snapshots, hitherto as safe as the famous needle in the enormous digital haystack that is the Internet.

The New York Times a testé this rapid search tool based on artificial intelligence by uploading the photo of a dozen journalists to the site, with their consent. PimEyes offers a series of photos of similar faces, with links to the sites from which they are taken. And the results are “alarmingly accurate”, as the title of the American newspaper points out:

“PimEyes found photos of each person, including some the reporters had never seen before, even when they were wearing dark glasses or a mask in the original photo, or turned their face away from the camera.”
