Billionaire U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta faced protests in Venice on Friday, as demonstrators mobilized against his 117-meter super yacht during a coastal diplomacy tour. Activists criticized the display of American wealth and influence amid ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and Italian leadership.
Protests and Tensions in the Venetian Lagoon
The arrival of the 384-foot luxury yacht Boardwalk in St. Mark’s Basin triggered immediate pushback from local groups. Protesters, many of whom had previously demonstrated against the wedding last year of Jeff Bezos to Lauren Sanchez, gathered to express their opposition to what they termed an unwelcome display of American wealth and influence,
as reported by AP News. The demonstration turned physical when protesters clashed with a double line of riot police, who utilized their shields to push back against the crowd as inflatable water toys were thrown toward the vessel.
The Coastal Diplomacy 250 Tour and Its Objectives
Despite the local unrest, the Coastal Diplomacy 250 tour—a journey spanning 13 Italian coastal regions—is framed by the ambassador as a celebration of shared history and economic partnership. Tilman Fertitta, who owns the NBA’s Houston Rockets and holds a net worth of $11.3 billion, issued a statement defending the right to peaceful protest while maintaining the tour’s intent.
“I like Italians, we Americans respect freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest; Coastal Diplomacy celebrates our nation’s founding and these fundamental rights,” he added, noting that the tour has “been an amazing way for me to meet Italians from all walks of life and to celebrate 250 years of U.S. independence and decades of friendship with Italy.”
The yacht itself, which features two helipads, a spa, a gym, and two swimming pools, has become a focal point for the protests. Demonstrators unfurled a banner as long as the vessel itself, reading Venezia non si USA,
a play on words that translates to Venice is not to be used,
while incorporating the acronym for the United States. This visual protest was intended to highlight what organizers called the dimensions of his arrogance.
Diplomatic Strains Between Washington and Rome
The tension on the water mirrors a cooling in the political relationship between the U.S. and Italy. Embassy. The relationship has been strained by a series of social media attacks directed at the Italian leader by Trump.
Fertitta, who was sworn in as ambassador in 2025, has continued his journey along the Adriatic coastline despite these frictions. While his itinerary for the Venice stop included participation in the Redentore festival, the public reception remains hostile. The protests in Venice highlight a deeper disconnect: while the ambassador views his super yacht as a vessel for diplomatic outreach, many locals see it as a symbol of an American administration that is increasingly viewed as destabilizing the post-World War II international order.
