Volvo has launched an over-the-air software update bringing native Apple Music integration to more than two million vehicles worldwide, including models from 2020 onward. The update allows drivers to stream music directly through the car’s infotainment system without needing a connected smartphone, marking a significant shift in automotive software capabilities.
Native Integration and the End of Smartphone Tethering
For years, accessing Apple Music in a vehicle meant relying on Apple CarPlay, a protocol that treats the car’s display as a secondary screen for the smartphone. Under that architecture, the iPhone handles all decoding and processing, sending a compressed audio stream to the vehicle’s amplifier. By moving to a native application that runs directly on the car’s infotainment system, Volvo has effectively removed the smartphone from the signal path.
This transition allows the vehicle’s own hardware to communicate directly with the audio system. By eliminating the phone’s role as the intermediary, the car can now process object-based audio data without the compression typical of pre-rendered, multichannel files.
Model Eligibility and Deployment Timeline
The rollout is expansive, targeting a wide range of Volvo nameplates manufactured from the 2020 model year to the present. According to the company’s official announcement, the software update is coming to the Volvo EX90, ES90, XC90, S90, V90, XC60, S60, V60, XC40, EX40 and EC40, from model year 2020 and onwards.
However, the company cautioned that the timing of availability may vary depending on car model.
While most existing owners will receive the feature via an over-the-air (OTA) update, the newest addition to the lineup will come ready to play. 9to5Mac notes that the brand-new EX60 electric crossover, which carries a starting price of $58,400, will ship with the integration pre-installed when deliveries commence later this summer.
Spatial Audio and the Acoustics of Electric Vehicles
The update introduces Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, though this feature is restricted to specific hardware configurations. Owners of the EX60, EX90, and ES90 models who have opted for the premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system can now access immersive surround sound. This implementation highlights the intersection of software and physical engineering; because electric vehicles lack the constant, low-frequency drone of a combustion engine, they provide a quieter cabin environment that allows premium audio systems to perform with greater clarity.
Promotional Access and Subscription Requirements
To encourage adoption, Volvo is providing incentives for both new and returning subscribers. New users can claim up to three months of Apple Music for free, while those who have been away from the service for at least one month are eligible for two free months. These promotional offers are valid until July 6, 2027. Accessing the service requires an active subscription, which is priced at $11.99 per month.
The Shift Toward Software-Defined Vehicles
Beyond the addition of a music streaming app, the update serves as a demonstration of Volvo’s evolving software architecture. The ability to push significant feature updates wirelessly has become a critical benchmark for legacy automakers attempting to compete with software-first manufacturers. In March, Volvo was recognized as the only legacy automaker to reach Level 5 software-defined vehicle status by S&P Global Mobility.

This capability is not without its complexities. As one report observed, the same wireless pipeline used to beam in the Apple Music update is capable of altering fundamental vehicle behaviors, such as how brakes perform on downhill grades. This underscores the reality that modern vehicles are increasingly treated as connected computing platforms. While the current update focuses on entertainment, the underlying infrastructure positions Volvo to continuously evolve vehicle performance and safety features long after the initial sale, leaving open the question of how frequently and in what capacity these deep-system updates will be utilized in the future.
