Aston Villa have signed Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho on a season-long loan with a conditional obligation to buy, following a deal driven by manager Unai Emery. The 22-year-old Argentine forward agreed to a four-year contract in Birmingham as both clubs navigate complex UEFA transfer rules.
Aston Villa have completed the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea on an initial loan deal featuring a conditional obligation to buy at the end of the 2026-27 season. The 22-year-old Argentine winger has already undergone a medical and traveled to Birmingham to finalize the paperwork.
Villa head coach Unai Emery said he was “delightedwith Garnacho's arrival, adding:
He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.” Emery had also wanted to sign the winger last summer when he moved from Manchester United to Chelsea.
Garnacho is set to become the third former Manchester United player to join Aston Villa in three years, following Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford in trying their luck at Villa Park after a lack of game time. Rashford had relative success at Villa during his loan spell in 2024-25 as he scored twice and assisted four in the second half of the campaign, while Sancho effectively replaced Rashford the following year. Garnacho only signed for the Blues last summer after falling out with old boss Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.
Serie A clubs Roma and Napoli
Serie A clubs including Roma, Napoli, and Milan had all been linked with the former Manchester United forward, but his wage demands always felt like a hurdle for the Italian clubs. Roma in particular faced consecutive days of transfer blows, with Crysencio Summerville nearing a big-money move to Al-Hilal whilst Garnacho joined Aston Villa.
UEFA transfer regulations and Morgan Rogers
The deal between the two clubs has come under scrutiny due to Chelsea’s £117 million signing of Morgan Rogers from Villa, which was announced on Tuesday. The fee surpassed Chelsea’s club record of £106m paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023. Under their transfer regulations, a swap deal is defined as multiple deals between two clubs going in both directions within a 45-day period. UEFA scrutinise any deal deemed as a swap deal to ensure transfer fees have not been inflated, with clubs facing a punishment—essentially, in Villa’s case, a reduction in the amount of “profit” they record from the Rogers sale in terms of UEFA’s calculations—if any wrongdoing is found. Regulators need to assess whether Garnacho’s loan with a conditional option to buy is deemed as a swap deal or not. According to The Athletic, Villa would be required to reduce the Rogers profit to the difference between transactions if regulatory flags are raised.
Garnacho’s transfer will become permanent next summer should certain criteria be met
, said the Blues, with the Argentine already agreeing a four-year contract at Villa Park. The terms of the obligation to buy clause have not been disclosed by either club, but it is expected to be triggered if conditions, such as the number of appearances Garnacho makes next season, are met. Chelsea believe the terms are easily reachable and they will achieve their original £43m valuation. Garnacho was allowed by new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso to stay away from the start of the club’s pre-season training to secure a move away from the club.
Argentina’s World Cup squad
Garnacho will now hope to get his career back on track, with the 22-year-old having missed out on Argentina’s World Cup squad after not playing for his country since 2024. Garnacho struggled to establish a regular starting spot at Chelsea following his £40m move from Old Trafford, starting just 22 matches in all competitions, 14 of which were in the Premier League, and scoring eight times. Manchester United would be due 10% of any eventual transfer fee.
The winger becomes Villa’s fourth signing, after the arrivals of Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes and Modou Keba Cisse. Villa’s club-record signing of Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg is considered to directly replace the outgoing Rogers, thus turning Villa’s attentions towards the recruitment of a wide player, where Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye and West Ham United’s Crysencio Summerville were among the other options. Meanwhile, Villa’s player sales this summer total nearly £200m, with Youri Tielemans, Donyell Malen, Enzo Barrenechea and Lewis Dobbin all leaving.
