The German Football Association (DFB) announced Friday that Jürgen Klopp has been named head coach of the Germany men’s national soccer team. The 59-year-old has signed a four-year contract that will see him lead the squad through Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain.
The appointment follows the resignation of former coach Julian Nagelsmann after Germany suffered a shock Round of 32 defeat to underdog Paraguay via a penalty shootout in the 2026 World Cup. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf stated that Klopp was the unequivocal choice
and the “ideal solution” from the start, noting that the association’s governing bodies unanimously approved the appointment.
Terms of Appointment and Staffing
Klopp’s contract officially begins on August 15. To secure his release from his role as Red Bull’s head of global soccer, the German FA agreed to play three internationals in Leipzig by 2030 and made a €1m donation to the company’s Wings for Life foundation, according to The Guardian.
Klopp will be supported by a coaching staff including Peter Krawietz and Pep Lijnders—both former assistants at Liverpool—and former Germany international Sven Bender.
Strategic Vision and Expectations
During a press conference in Frankfurt, Klopp described the role as the “high point” of his professional life, stating that the national team can unite Germans like almost nothing else. However, he issued a warning that his appointment does not automatically guarantee world championship status, suggesting that expectations must be adjusted.
The new head coach also set strict boundaries regarding his tenure. He stated he is prepared to walk away from the job without severance pay if it does not work out, and warned he would resign immediately if his family is not left in peace by the media.
Rebuilding a Struggling Giant
Klopp is tasked with restoring a winning mentality to a team that has struggled on the global stage since winning the 2014 World Cup. Germany failed to advance past the group stage in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and has not reached a European Championship semifinal in its last two attempts. While the team reached the 2024 Euro quarter-finals under Nagelsmann, they were eliminated by Spain.
Klopp intends to build a team that fights for each other
and enjoys football.
Managerial Track Record
This marks Klopp’s first role in international management. His previous coaching achievements include:
- Mainz 05: Began his head-coaching career in 2001, leading the club to the Bundesliga for the first time.
- Borussia Dortmund: Won back-to-back league titles in the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons.
- Liverpool: Spent nine years at the club, winning the Premier League (the club’s first in 30 years), the 2019 Champions League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the Club World Cup.
Klopp left Liverpool in 2024, citing fatigue and a lack of energy, before briefly serving as a television analyst during the World Cup in the US, Mexico, and Canada.
Klopp’s first official match will be an away fixture against the DW in Amsterdam on September 24 as part of the UEFA Nations League. Germany is also scheduled to face Serbia and Greece in Group A2.
