Six people were killed on July 24, 2026, during clashes between Israeli settlers and Palestinians in the village of Tal in the West Bank. The incident, which left four Palestinians and two Israelis dead, triggered widespread settler reprisals and a major Israeli military counterterrorism

The violence erupted Friday morning near the village of Tal, southwest of Nablus, in an area the Israeli military described as a violent confrontation between dozens of Palestinians and Israeli civilians. While the Israeli military reported that soldiers were dispatched after civilians hiking in the area were attacked, Palestinian officials and witnesses describe a coordinated intrusion by armed settlers.
Conflicting Accounts of the Tal Village Attack
The sequence of events on July 24 remains contested. According to witnesses interviewed by Human Rights Watch, a group of 40 to 50 settlers approached Tal from the east between 6:10 and 6:45 a.m., attacking homes with stones and wounding a Palestinian man. About 30 minutes later, the same group reentered from the southwest, joined by Israeli soldiers.
Walid Zidan, head of the Tell village council, told AFP that about 20 settlers entered the village, prompting residents to defend their property. He stated that Israeli soldiers joined the settlers in opening fire, asserting that the settlers stormed the village with the intention of killing and vandalizing property.
Conversely, the Israeli military stated that terrorists stole a weapon from security personnel and opened fire on civilians.

As part of this effort, the military cancelled leave for certain personnel.
The operation extended into medical facilities. The Israeli military reported apprehending two men at a Nablus hospital where they had been taken after being injured. However, Palestinian officials alleged that the military raided the hospital and assaulted emergency department staff.
Settler Reprisals and Outpost Expansion
The deaths in Tal triggered a wave of settler rampages across more than a dozen villages. According to the Times of Israel, hundreds of Israelis torched homes and hurled stones at Palestinians, specifically targeting buildings and farms following the funeral of one of the Israeli soldiers.
Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz further announced a series of steps
that includes accelerating the legalization of farm outposts and the establishment of new ones.

Human Rights Watch notes that the July 24 killings brought the Palestinian death toll in the occupied West Bank since July 19 to 10. The organization attributes this volatility to years of lawlessness and impunity for settler attacks, which they claim have turned the region into a “powder keg.”

The escalation has drawn sharp condemnation from neighboring Arab states. Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, warned that the Israeli government is pushing the West Bank towards explosion, citing violations of the status quo at Jerusalem’s Holy Sites as dangerous provocations.
This volatility occurs as Netanyahu prepares for high-level diplomacy in the United States. The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with President Trump in Washington next week and will also attend the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham.
The immediate future of the region remains uncertain as the Israeli government continues to step up preparations to expand settlements just three months before Israelis go to the polls.
