Apple is preparing a major redesign of its high-end laptops, expected between late 2026 and early 2027.
Apple has not significantly overhauled the high-end MacBook design since 2021. That is about to change. According to reports from Bloomberg and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a new flagship machine—potentially branded as the MacBook Ultra
—is slated for mass production by late 2026, with a consumer release likely in early 2027.
This shift is not merely a spec bump. It represents a philosophical pivot for the company, as it finally integrates touch input and a new display architecture into the Mac ecosystem. The timing is complicated by global memory chip shortages, which Mark Gurman suggests may push the launch toward the early 2027 window.
OLED Displays and the Shift to Touch-Friendly macOS
The most significant visual leap is the transition from mini-LED to OLED technology. The MacBook Ultra will reportedly use a hybrid OLED structure combining an oxide TFT backplane with a tandem two-stack OLED, a method already utilized in the iPad Pro to extend panel lifespan. This change allows for true blacks, higher contrast, and improved power efficiency, while also contributing to a noticeably thinner and lighter chassis.
Alongside the new screen comes a feature Apple has historically resisted: a touchscreen. However, the company is not turning the laptop into a tablet replacement. Mark Gurman describes the approach as touch-friendly, not touch-first,
meaning users will move between the trackpad, keyboard, and screen interchangeably.
To support this, Apple is reportedly reworking macOS so controls adapt to the input method.
The M5 and M7 Chip Roadmap
The internal hardware strategy for the Ultra is surprisingly conservative at launch. While it is a new design, the initial models (codenamed K114 and K116) are expected to ship with the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips already found in current MacBook Pros.

This suggests Apple is prioritizing the industrial design and display transition over raw silicon gains in the first wave. The real performance leap is expected later. Reports indicate Apple may be skipping or short-cycling the M6 Pro and Max chips in favor of AI-focused M7 chips, which will feature upgraded neural accelerators and increased memory bandwidth. These M7 versions are projected to arrive in late 2027 or early 2028.
Dynamic Island and Physical Redesign
The “notch” that has defined recent Mac displays is expected to disappear. In its place, a smaller hole-punch camera will be used, which will then digitally expand into a Dynamic Island.
Despite the thinner profile, there is no current indication that Apple will remove essential ports.

The MacBook Neo is receiving a notable bump. Testing of the A19 chip shows a potential multi-core performance increase of nearly 9% over the A18 Pro, with RAM increasing to 12GB. Meanwhile, the MacBook Air is expected to receive an OLED screen in 2028, following the lead of the high-end Pro and Ultra models.

With a new hardware leasing program rumored and prices already raised in June 2025, the introduction of an “Ultra” tier suggests Apple is positioning its Mac lineup to capture a higher price ceiling, specifically targeting professionals who will pay a premium for the intersection of AI-optimized silicon and touch-enabled OLED hardware.
