NASA Evacuates Madrid Deep Space Site as Wildfires Force Operational Shift

NASA evacuated the Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex (MDSCC) in Spain on July 24, 2026, after massive wildfires swept through the region of Robledo. The agency transitioned mission operations to its California site to maintain contact with distant spacecraft while assessing potential damage to the Spanish facility’s sensitive equipment.

The Madrid facility is one of only three global hubs in the Deep Space Network (DSN), which provides the essential link for transmitting commands and receiving data from probes exploring the furthest reaches of the solar system. When flames overran the complex, NASA evacuated all personnel to safety.

Operational Shift to Goldstone and Canberra

With the Madrid site offline, NASA shifted its communication load to the other two DSN locations: Canberra, Australia, and Goldstone, California. This transition was described by the agency as seamless, ensuring that support for active missions remained uninterrupted.

The stakes for this network are high. The DSN is used to manage the James Webb Space Telescope, the Artemis missions orbiting the Moon, and Voyager 1, the most distant human-made object in the solar system. According to Ars Technica, status updates on Friday afternoon showed no activity at the Madrid site, while antennas in Australia and California continued communicating with spacecraft like Juno and Voyager 2.

Compounding Failures: The Goldstone Antenna Crisis

The loss of the Madrid site is particularly acute because the DSN is already operating at reduced capacity. The 70-meter antenna in California, known as Deep Space Station 14 (DSS-14), has been offline since last year. This outage was caused by an accident on September 16, 2025, where the structure over-rotated while tracking the Juno spacecraft.

That mishap caused significant infrastructure damage, including ruptured cables and water lines that flooded the antenna’s base with 200,000 gallons of glycol-tainted water. NASA classified the event as a Type A mishap, with repair costs estimated between $4.1 million and $4.6 million. Because these repairs are being combined with planned upgrades, the California antenna is not expected to return to service into 2028.

Consequently, the network is currently reliant on a single operational 70-meter radio antenna located in Australia. This creates a precarious bottleneck for deep space telemetry, though the agency noted that the next Artemis lunar landing mission, Artemis IV, is targeted for no earlier than 2028.

Regional Crisis and Evacuations in Robledo

The fire hit the MDSCC, located roughly 37 miles west of central Madrid in Robledo de Chavela. The scale of the regional disaster was immense; evacuation orders were issued for 60,000 people in the area. Reports from Canal 24 Horas indicated that 90 workers at the NASA site specifically were evacuated, while the BBC reported that more than 25,000 people across Spain had been evacuated and another 20,000 placed in lockdown.

The NASA facility was not the only space asset at risk. A separate tracking station operated by the Spanish government and the European Space Agency (ESA), known as the Cebreros tracking station, was also evacuated. The proximity of these two facilities suggests a concentrated vulnerability of deep-space tracking infrastructure in this specific region of Spain.

Environmental Drivers and European Blazes

The wildfires in Spain are part of a broader European crisis fueled by record high temperatures and chronic drought. Similar blazes occurred in France, where a wind shift turned a fire into a large, self-sustaining fire moving toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area, according to French interior minister Laurent Nunez.

The human toll in Spain has been severe. In the town of Los Gallardos, near Almeria, cbsnews.com in a fire that consumed nearly 7,800 acres. Regional President Juanma Moreno stated that the majority of the victims were foreigners, including four individuals believed to be of British origin. Some victims reportedly died after attempting to find alternative exit paths through dry riverbeds rather than following official evacuation routes.

While the fire has passed through the MDSCC, the extent of the damage remains unknown. NASA spokespeople stated that site assessments could happen as early as Saturday, provided conditions are safe. The primary concern is the sensitive equipment inside the observatory, which could be compromised by heat or smoke even if the structures remain standing.

The vulnerability of the DSN is highlighted by the specialized nature of the Madrid site. On April 20, 2024, the complex performed a historic test by arraying all six of its radio frequency antennas to receive data from Voyager 1. As Voyager continues to move further from Earth, the need for such multi-antenna arrays increases; currently, five antennas are required to downlink science data from the spacecraft’s Plasma Wave System.

For NASA, the immediate priority is determining if the Madrid dishes are still viable or if the agency must rely on a crippled two-site network for the foreseeable future.
