Eight members of the same family, including two adults and six children, died Friday following a house fire on Riverside Trail in Grand Haven Township, Michigan. Authorities confirmed that some victims suffered gunshot wounds, prompting an active suspicious death investigation by local and state police.
Emergency Response and the Discovery on Riverside Trail
The sequence of events began early Friday morning. According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews first received calls about the smell of smoke in the area of Riverside Trail near 148th Avenue between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. (or around 8:30 a.m. Friday according to the sheriff’s office). Deputies responded to the scene but were unable to locate a fire during that initial check. Firefighters were initially sent to Riverside Trail, in the area of 148th Avenue and Mercury Drive in Grand Haven Township, around 8:30 a.m. Friday after calls about the smell of smoke, the sheriff’s office said. They could not find a fire and left.
That changed hours later. It was not until almost 11:45 a.m. that deputies returned to the area after callers reported seeing white smoke, which was coming from the Riverside Trail home, according to the sheriff’s office. At about 11:40 a.m. local time on Friday, deputies with the Ottawa county sheriff’s office and firefighters from the Grand Haven fire department were dispatched to a residence on Riverside Trail in Grand Haven Township. Firefighters and Ottawa County deputies rushed back to the property.
Crews launched an offensive attack, entering the smoke-filled residence to knock down the flames and check for occupants. Once crews entered the smoke-filled home to extinguish the fire, they made the grim discovery. Units made entry inside to battle the fire because there was smoke showing from the residence. When they got inside, they noticed that there were several people deceased inside the home,
Capt Jacob Sparks said at a press conference. Inside, they found eight people dead. The victims included six children ranging in age from about 5 to 15 (specifically, between the ages of five and 15), alongside two adults in their 40s (two adults in their 40s and six children ranging in age from about 5 to about 15). All eight are believed to be related and to have lived at the home together (the victims were all related and living at the home together, and authorities referred to them as a family).
The Investigation: Gunshot Wounds and Working Theories
While heavy smoke damage formed part of the emergency, investigators quickly realized the tragedy involved firearms as well. and added, I don’t know if there were other means that were used.
Autopsies are scheduled to be completed over the weekend (specifically, Saturday), according to ABC News, as investigators continue working to determine exactly what happened. When pressed by reporters about potential motives, Sparks acknowledged that investigators are probing whether the incident was a murder-suicide, though he emphasized caution. It’s too early for me to say that it’s a murder-suicide. I can tell you that that’s one theory that we have and we’re still looking to see if we can verify that,

he said. Officials believe everyone involved in the incident is accounted for among the deceased inside the residence. Investigators with the Michigan state police’s arson team have joined the investigation (sheriff’s detectives are investigating alongside arson investigators with the Michigan State Police). Officials believe the fire originated inside the residence, but the exact cause and point of origin have not yet been determined. The home is located in Grand Haven Township, on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.
Community Shock and School District Support
Neighbors reported smelling and seeing smoke coming from their home on Riverside Trail near Birdsong Lane, according to the sheriff’s office.

Next Steps in the Ottawa County Investigation
Law enforcement officials have not yet released the identities of the eight victims, pending formal identification and the completion of autopsies. The sheriff’s office is not releasing any names yet; more information will be shared after autopsies are completed in the coming days.
