MacBook Ultra: Apple Plans Touchscreen and OLED Redesign for 2026-2027

Apple is preparing a major overhaul of its Mac lineup for late 2026 and early 2027, headlined by a redesigned high-end laptop potentially branded as the MacBook Ultra. The new model is expected to introduce the first touchscreen and OLED display to the Mac line, alongside a thinner chassis and a hole-punch camera.

The upcoming high-end MacBook represents the most significant external shift for the Pro line since 2021. While Apple has historically resisted touch-enabled laptops, citing the discomfort of vertical touch surfaces, the company is now reportedly moving toward a traditional clamshell design that integrates touch as a secondary input option rather than a convertible tablet hybrid.

OLED Displays and the Move to Dynamic Island

A central component of the redesign is the transition from mini-LED backlighting to a hybrid OLED panel. This shift removes a physical layer from the lid, which may result in a noticeably thinner and lighter machine. According to Omdia, Samsung Display is expected to supply 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch panels, which are slightly larger than the current 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch screens. This increase in panel size within a largely unchanged chassis should result in narrower bezels.

The most visible change to the display is the expected removal of the notch. In its place, Apple is reportedly implementing a pill-shaped hole-punch camera to accommodate an interactive Dynamic Island. This software-driven system would allow macOS to integrate connectivity indicators and system alerts into a unified space. Evidence of this shift appears in macOS 27, where the Spotlight Search or Ask interface utilizes a dark, pill-shaped design tailored for such a cutout.

M6 Silicon and the MacBook Ultra Performance Tier

The naming and positioning of this new hardware remain fluid. While it may be a version of the MacBook Pro, some reports suggest the introduction of a top-tier MacBook Ultra label targeting professionals. Despite the “Ultra” branding, reports note that this specific touchscreen model will likely use the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips found in current Pro models, rather than the newer M6 generation.

The M6 processor is expected to debut this fall in a base model MacBook Pro, offering faster memory bandwidth and improved CPU and GPU performance.

The MacBook Neo and Annual Refresh Cycles

While the Ultra targets the high end, the MacBook Neo is being positioned as an important product. Unlike the Pro line’s multi-year cycles, the Neo is designed for an annual refresh every 12 months. This strategy allows Apple to utilize “binned” chips—processors that fail full certification for the iPhone but remain highly capable for a laptop.

The original Neo utilized the A18 Pro chip. The next iteration, the MacBook Neo 2, is expected to use the binned A19 Pro. Pricing for the Neo has seen a mid-cycle increase to $699, though there is speculation regarding pricing for an entry-level version of the MacBook Neo 2.

Supply Chain Constraints and Launch Windows

The exact arrival of these machines is currently hindered by industry-wide memory and storage constraints. While some reports suggest a fall 2026 release, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicates that early 2027 is more likely due to a global memory chip shortage.

This shortage is not only affecting the laptops but also the Mac mini and Mac Studio. The Mac mini is reportedly being tested with M5 Pro and base M6 chips, while the Mac Studio is being tested with M5 Max and M5 Ultra processors. The release dates for these desktops remain in flux, depending entirely on the state of memory-chip supplies.

The move toward a touchscreen and OLED is a calculated pivot. If the MacBook Neo succeeds in mirroring the iPhone’s 12-month replacement cycle, Apple will have effectively shifted the laptop from a long-term durable good to a recurring annual upgrade.
