markets.businessinsider.com has announced a strategic collaboration with TechRadar to integrate edge artificial intelligence across upcoming lunar and cislunar missions. The initiative will utilize the Nvidia Jetson platform and Nvidia CUDA-X libraries to support onboard data processing, autonomous navigation, terrain mapping, and mission communications.
Nvidia and Lunar Outpost Partner to Bring Edge AI to Upcoming Moon Missions
The partnership is designed to lay the groundwork for a permanent human presence and a future Moon base, supporting contributions to NASA’s Artemis program. Lunar Outpost is contracted for ten lunar and cislunar missions set to launch before 2030, with Nvidia technology expected to power all ten deployments.
Mission Manifest and the Upcoming Lunar Voyage 2
The deployment of Nvidia edge AI will begin with the Lunar Voyage 2 (LV2) mission, scheduled to launch later in 2026 via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. During this mission, the rover will explore Reiner Gamma, a distinct lunar swirl geological feature known for its anomalous magnetic characteristics.

For LV2, Nvidia Jetson modules will manage the command and control of the rover’s LiDAR system. The technology will also handle primary sensor data post-processing and file compression for downlink to Earth, addressing the limited communication bandwidth available on the Moon.

Engineering Challenges and Advanced Architecture
Operating computing hardware on the lunar surface presents severe engineering hurdles compared to low Earth orbit (LEO). Devices on the Moon lack the partial shielding provided by Earth’s magnetic field, leaving them directly exposed to high-energy cosmic radiation and extreme thermal fluctuations. Additionally, systems must maintain high energy efficiency to survive long lunar nights with minimal power consumption.

To address these challenges, Lunar Outpost is combining Nvidia Jetson modules with traditional spaceflight heritage avionics platforms to boost autonomous system reactivity. Future Human-Robot Exploration and Cislunar Expansion
Following the initial LV2 deployment, subsequent missions such as Lunar Voyage 3 (LV3) and Lunar Voyage 5 (LV5) will introduce more advanced capabilities. These missions are planned to execute the first human-robot exploration of another world.
To support these complex operations, Lunar Outpost will deploy the space-qualified Nvidia Space-1 Vera Rubin Module. This hardware will manage real-time data ingestion, topographic mapping, autonomous navigation paths, real-time video streaming back to Earth, and direct human-robot interaction scenarios.
Lunar Outpost’s broader mission manifest also includes designing and delivering the Pegasus Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) for NASA. The company additionally participated in the MOXIE project alongside NASA and MIT from 2021 to 2023, generating oxygen on the surface of Mars, and is a member of the Nvidia Inception Program.
