Indonesia Fire Hotspots Hit Record 96,000 as Super El Niño Threat Looms

Indonesia recorded more than 96,000 fire hotspots by July 27, 2026, surpassing previous years as meteorologists warn a developing El Niño could push temperatures past 2 degrees Celsius, driving severe drought across the region.

Satellite Data Reveals Record Hotspot Surge Across Indonesia

A new satellite monitoring platform has detected an unprecedented volume of fire activity across the archipelago well before the traditional peak of the dry season. Data from FireWatch, developed by the forest monitoring platform Nusantara Atlas, shows that more than 96,000 fire hotspots were identified nationwide as of July 27, 2026.

That total exceeds the figures recorded at the same point during any prior monitored year, outpacing the roughly 88,000 hotspots detected by late July 2019 and the 58,000 logged during the same stretch in 2023. Both benchmark years produced some of Indonesia’s most destructive fire seasons in the past 10 years, scorching more than 2.6 million hectares and 1.7 million hectares, respectively.

Unlike traditional hotspot counters that register only active thermal anomalies, FireWatch estimates that approximately 103,000 hectares burned across the country during the first half of 2026 alone. Technology consultancy operators emphasize that this elevated activity serves as an early warning rather than the annual peak, which historically accelerates in August before cresting in September and October.

Climate Scientists Warn of a Rapidly Developing Phenomenon

Underpinning the surge is a fast-developing tropical Pacific climate cycle that researchers predict will outpace recent historical events. According to monitoring from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, almost 73% of the country’s seasonal climate zones had entered the dry season, with nearly 93 percent of the nation recording low rainfall during the second 10-day period of July.

Researchers at the National Research and Innovation Agency note that the system’s intensity has already bypassed the maximum thresholds of the 2023 event.

Erma Yulihastin, a research professor from the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), stated that the current El Niño intensity monitored by satellite has reached 1.74 degrees Celsius, surpassing the 2023 case where the maximum intensity was only 1.6 degrees Celsius. She noted that the temperature continues to rise and is predicted to reach a threshold above 2 degrees Celsius in August.

The climate shift will not distribute its impacts evenly across the archipelago. While northern regions such as Aceh, western Sumatra, and northern Kalimantan are projected to retain some rainfall, approximately 70 percent of Indonesia faces hotter and drier conditions.

    In carbon-rich peatland zones, BMKG warns that strengthening El Niño conditions could increase the risk of forest and land fires, particularly in highly flammable landscapes such as peatlands.

    Agricultural and Health Pressures Mount

    Beyond ecological damage, BMKG warns that El Niño will impact the agricultural sector and water availability. This includes risks of growth phase disruptions, decreased productivity, and increased potential for crop failure due to water deficits.

    Additionally, the phenomenon has the potential to lower air quality due to increased pollutant concentrations and trigger public health issues, such as acute respiratory infections (ISPA) and illnesses caused by exposure to high temperatures.

    Domestically, BMKG cautions that agricultural productivity faces severe threats from water deficits, which could lead to crop growth disruptions and reduced yields.
