Expectation met reality in the darkest hours of Thursday morning as air raid alerts wailed across most regions of Ukraine. Ahead of the explosions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that a large-scale assault was imminent, citing a briefing from Air Force Commander Anatolii Kryvonozhko regarding preparations Moscow had made days prior.
Ballistic Missile Strikes and Casualties Across Ukrainian Cities
The overnight offensive struck a wide geographic swath of the country, stretching from the capital to western logistics hubs. In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the city was targeted with ballistic weapons, igniting fires at non-residential sites and killing at least one person while wounding others.
The heaviest casualties unfolded away from the capital. In the central Dnipropetrovsk region, Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the regional military administration, confirmed six deaths and ten injuries. The toll included young children. In Zelenskyy’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih, a direct strike by an Iskander-M ballistic missile launched from Voronezh obliterated a family home in a village on the outskirts.
Farther west, the city of Lviv absorbed significant destruction close to the Polish border.
Airspace Violations and Polish Military Response
The scale of the bombardment directly impacted NATO’s eastern flank. The Polish Armed Forces announced the immediate scrambling of fighter jets and an early warning aircraft to secure national airspace, bringing ground-based air defenses and radar reconnaissance systems to a state of readiness.
The defensive posture proved warranted when an unidentified object crashed roughly 90 kilometers (55 miles) deep into Polish territory, landing in an undeveloped area near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin province. Polish police discovered a crater and scattered debris in a field after the object vanished from military radar tracking. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed a violation of national airspace during the strikes, and government officials traveled directly to the impact site to investigate.
Air Defense Shortages and Diplomatic Fallout
Zelenskyy pointed directly to supply constraints, emphasizing that protection against ballistic threats remains the most important task when it comes to saving the lives of our people.
The appeals follow a recent White House visit where Zelenskyy discussed acquiring manufacturing licenses for Patriot surface-to-air missiles with United States President Donald Trump.
