Microsoft is deploying a series of performance and memory efficiency updates to Windows 11, focusing on reducing the operating system’s memory footprint and improving responsiveness. These changes, which began rolling out to Windows Insiders, will expand to broader Windows 11 PC users starting this fall.

The push for a leaner Windows 11 is part of a larger quality commitment initiated in March. According to the Windows Blog, the company has spent the last four months targeting three specific pillars: performance, reliability, and well-crafted experiences.

Reducing the Windows Memory Footprint

A central part of this update involves better memory efficiency to ensure the OS remains responsive across various hardware configurations. Microsoft is implementing a more efficient memory allocator to cut overhead for both system components and individual applications.

The strategy extends into the framework level, with continued tuning of WinUI 3 so that applications built on that framework use less memory by design. Additionally, Microsoft is driving efficiencies within Chromium and Webview2 components when they are integrated into the operating system.

Microsoft noted that alongside all of these areas, they have steadily been introducing several improvements to the memory efficiency of Windows.

By targeting the memory footprint, Microsoft is attempting to solve the “stutter” and delay issues that often plague lower-spec machines, ensuring that basic system functions don’t compete for limited RAM with user applications.

File Explorer and Shell Responsiveness

Beyond raw memory numbers, the company is overhauling the “feel” of the OS. The Windows Blog reports that foundational architecture enhancements have been previewed for File Explorer to improve reliability during launch and navigation.

  • Eliminating unstable transitions and blurry thumbnails in the Home view.
  • Improving readability and usability in the Address Bar.
  • Refining file size formatting and keyboard navigation.
  • Faster application launches for the Snipping Tool, Search, and Start menu.

The shell is also seeing a modernization push. WinUI 3 has been extended into more of the Windows shell, including the new Run experience and Widgets. Further updates to Autoplay and File/Folder Properties dialogs are expected to arrive in Windows Insider Preview Experimental builds.

The Driver Quality Initiative and Connectivity

Hardware stability is being addressed through the Driver Quality Initiative (DQI), introduced in May. This ecosystem-wide effort aims to raise the bar for driver security and reliability to prevent the system crashes and instabilities that often stem from third-party hardware software.

The results of these efforts are already appearing in connectivity fixes. Microsoft reports major gains in printer connectivity, specifically reducing in-network discovery failures. Other improvements include better USB4 docking performance and increased compatibility with Bluetooth devices, such as AirPods.

For developers, the focus has shifted toward speed. At Build 2026 in June, Microsoft introduced a developer-optimized Windows 11 experience, public previews of WSL containers, and Microsoft Execution Containers to streamline compile times and enterprise workflows.

AI Integration and User Control

Microsoft is also recalibrating how AI appears in the OS. Rather than a blanket rollout, the company is shifting toward a more intentional approach, starting with inbox apps to ensure AI provides actual value rather than disruption.

This philosophy of “quieting” the OS extends to the user interface. Recent previews have introduced a calmer home screen for the Windows Search Box, the removal of promotional content from web results, and more control over widgets and feed experiences, which are now quieter by default.

The company is not stopping at the software layer; Windows Hello has also been updated to make facial and fingerprint sign-ins more reliable, aiming to reduce the time it takes for a user to reach the desktop.

Microsoft noted that the team and the speaker have been reflecting on their progress four months in, stating that they are not slowing down in their commitment to Windows quality.

While many of these features have been tested by Insiders, the broad rollout across all Windows 11 PCs is scheduled to begin this fall.
