Hybrid Cars Gain Popularity in Indonesia as GIIAS 2026 Showcases New Models

Hybrid vehicles have become a primary choice for Indonesian consumers in 2026, offering a transition to electrification by combining fuel efficiency with the convenience of conventional gasoline engines. According to Media Indonesia, these vehicles are particularly popular because they provide fuel savings and carbon emission reductions without requiring users to rely on charging station infrastructure.

Suzuki’s Hybrid Lineup at GIIAS 2026

At the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026 held at ICE BSD City in Tangerang, Suzuki showcased four hybrid models as part of its strategy to provide environmentally friendly and efficient transportation. As reported by Kompas.com, the lineup includes:

  • All New Ertiga Hybrid: Features a 1,462 cc K15B engine producing 104.7 PS and 138 Nm of torque, supported by a lithium-ion battery and Integrated Starter Generator (ISG).
  • New XL7 Hybrid: Also utilizing the K15B engine, this model incorporates Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) technology with a 10 Ah lithium-ion battery.
  • Grand Vitara Hybrid: Equipped with a 1,462 cc K15C Dual Jet engine and SHVS technology, delivering approximately 103 hp and 136 Nm of torque via a 6-speed automatic transmission.
  • Suzuki Fronx Hybrid: A new model in Indonesia offering two engine options: the K15B (104.7 PS) for the GL variant and the K15C (100.6 PS) for the SGX and GX variants, the latter of which uses the SHVS mild hybrid system.

Fuel Efficiency and Market Performance

Efficiency is a primary driver for the adoption of hybrid technology, especially for urban drivers facing traffic congestion. For instance, the New XL7 Hybrid Facelift (also known as the New XL7 Alpha Hybrid) records average fuel consumption of 15 km/liter in the city and 19 km/liter on highways. Other high-efficiency models highlighted at GIIAS 2026 include the Toyota Veloz Hybrid EV, which reaches 28.9 km/liter, and the MG ZS Hybrid Plus, which achieves approximately 19.6 km/liter based on WLTP standards.

The Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid has also emerged as a favorite due to its Full Hybrid (HEV) system. According to Media Indonesia, this system allows the car to operate in EV Mode at low speeds, enabling fuel consumption to exceed 25 km/liter.

Diverse Hybrid Options and Pricing

The Indonesian market currently offers a range of electrification levels, from mild hybrids to Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) and Range-Extended Electric Vehicles (REEV). For those with budgets under Rp350 million, Suzuki’s mild hybrid technology is cited as the most realistic option. The Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid, for example, has an estimated OTR Jakarta price between Rp285,000,000 and Rp310,000,000.

Higher-end options include the MG VS HEV, with a combined power of 177 PS and an estimated price of Rp389,000,000 to Rp400,000,000. For premium needs, the Honda CR-V e:HEV, featuring a 2,000 cc direct-injected engine with the i-MMD system, is estimated between Rp800,000,000 and Rp820,000,000.

Comparing Hybrid and Electric Technology

While both aim for environmental sustainability, hybrids differ fundamentally from pure electric vehicles (EVs). According to Suara.com, EVs rely entirely on batteries and produce zero tailpipe emissions, whereas hybrids combine a conventional gasoline engine with an electric motor. This makes hybrids more flexible for long-distance travel as the gasoline engine serves as a backup, eliminating the “range anxiety” associated with relying solely on charging stations.
