President Donald Trump has contacted Ohio Representative Max Miller to raise concerns regarding the Republican’s reelection campaign following severe allegations of abuse. Two sources familiar with the call confirmed to Cbsnews that the conversation occurred on a Monday.
Trump Expresses Concern Over Max Miller’s Campaign
Despite the president’s concerns, Miller told Trump he has no plans to leave the race. Miller cited internal campaign polling that allegedly shows him in a strong position for reelection, though CBS News has not independently verified those figures.
In a statement to CBS News, Miller said, If I dropped out of this race, it would mean we as a nation have fallen so far from our American values. I will not validate false claims by removing myself just to please the court of public opinion.
Abuse Allegations and Legal Disputes
The controversy centers on allegations made by Miller’s ex-wife, Emily Moreno, the daughter of Republican Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno. In police reports and court papers, Moreno has accused Miller of throwing her against a wall during a February custody exchange and causing their 2-year-old daughter to suffer a handprint-shaped bruise and a clavicle fracture.
Additional allegations from Moreno include:
- Pointing a gun at her last year.
- Throwing hot water at her in 2024.
- A domestic incident in March 2025.
Police reports indicate that the child told Moreno, Daddy kill you
, after staying with Miller. Miller has denied the child would have heard such a statement.
Miller has adamantly denied all allegations of abuse against his ex-wife and child, accusing Moreno of defaming him and abusing their daughter herself. He pointed to an April letter from county investigators that closed a probe into the February allegations of child abuse, labeling them unsubstantiated.
Family Conflict and Senator Moreno’s Response
The legal battle between Miller and Moreno, who were married from 2022 to June 2025, has escalated into a public political conflict. Both parties currently have court-ordered restraining orders against each other.
Senator Bernie Moreno has called for Miller to step down, stating on X that Miller needs serious psychological help
and is a danger to my daughter.
The senator wrote that Miller should not be free to continue endangering others
and should not serve in the House of Representatives
after the past two years were pure hell
for his family.
Further legal complications emerged recently when Emily Moreno asked a court to issue a restraining order to block Miller from contacting her attorney, Andrew Zashin. Moreno alleged in an affidavit that Miller had physical and verbal altercations with Zashin and another attorney following recent court hearings.
Trump’s Stance and Political Stakes
President Trump has maintained a supportive yet cautious tone toward the congressman, who previously served as his campaign aide. During an August 3 news conference, Trump described the situation as a very sad thing
that should be resolved by the families involved.
When asked if Miller should resign, Trump noted, so far it’s accusations,
and said he would look at it.
He referred to Miller as a good person
and a very good person.
Miller is currently seeking a third term representing a Republican-leaning district in the Cleveland area, which includes parts of Cuyahoga and Wayne counties, as well as Ashland and Medina counties. He is facing a challenge in November from Democrat Brian Poindexter.
