The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has declared UK military bases legitimate targets for attack after the US used RAF Fairford to launch B-1 bomber missions against Iran. The IRGC also issued a specific, chilling warning to the British Royal Family on July 23, 2026.
Tensions between Tehran and the West have escalated following a series of US strikes, with the IRGC now widening its targeting list to include the United Kingdom. The shift comes after the US Air Force (USAF) allegedly utilized RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire as a launch point for long-range heavy bombers to hit IRGC assets.
RAF Fairford and the B-1 Bomber Missions
The catalyst for the current threat is a Tuesday mission involving a B-1 Lancer heavy bomber. According to the US news website Axios, the aircraft—capable of carrying two-dozen 2,000lb bombs—took off from RAF Fairford. While the aircraft’s exact flight path remains unconfirmed, reporting suggests it may have stopped en route before striking targets in Iran.
This operation marks the first B-1 mission since fighting in Iran resumed nearly two weeks ago. The return of these heavy bombers coincides with a broader US military surge in the Middle East, including the deployment of additional fighter jet squadrons and US Special Forces.
The IRGC claimed in a statement that the US turned to the Fairford base because missile reserves of the aforementioned ships
in the Indian Ocean had run out. The outlet Mirror also reports that B-52 bombers were used to target IRGC bases in these latest attacks.

The UK government has maintained a cautious public stance, stating that for operational security reasons
it does not comment on the military operations of foreign nations. However, a government spokesperson emphasized that the UK’s Armed Forces are ready to defend the country 24-7 using a layered approach to air and missile defense involving the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force.
The use of RAF Fairford is a point of significant political contention. In March, then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer permitted the USAF to use the base for defensive
strikes against Iranian forces, though he reportedly refused to involve British forces in President Donald Trump’s war on Iran.
This agreement includes operations to degrade Iranian missile sites that threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Regional Escalation and Houthi Involvement
The threats from the IRGC are unfolding alongside a wider regional conflict. Following 12 consecutive nights of US strikes, the IRGC warned that it would not allow the US to use deceptive ceasefires
to replenish ammunition before resuming attacks.
Simultaneously, the Houthis—an armed Islamist group aligned with Iran—have intensified their operations. On Tuesday, the group announced a blockade of the Bab al Mandeb Strait, followed by attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea on Wednesday night.
The Strategic Stakes for the UK
The situation reveals a dangerous gap between the UK’s diplomatic goal of avoiding direct combat involvement and the reality of its geography. While the UK government maintains that US operations are separate from British forces, the IRGC does not recognize this distinction. By treating RAF Fairford as a legitimate target, Tehran is effectively signaling that the UK is a combatant by implication of providing infrastructure.
This escalation has already sparked internal friction within the UK, evidenced by anti-war protests held at RAF Fairford in April. As the US continues to surge Special Forces and fighter jets into the region, the UK faces the immediate risk of its soil becoming a front in the conflict between Washington and Tehran.
